The purpose of this study is to establish the concept of Modern Ch inese collocations,to classify patterns of collocation and further to induce their syntactic and semantic features. For the convenience of research,we would limit our discussion to HSK level 1 words, which ar e basic and essential requirements for any learners of contemporary Ch inese language, especially during the beginner' s stage of language lea rning. Therefore, this study would be mainly focused on HSK level 1 wo rds and some other words that collocated with HSK level 1 words. This thesis is divided into six chapters. The first chapter introduces the purpose of this research on the c ollocations. In the second chapter,we start with an overview of the related st udies of the collocation which were accomplished at the inside and out side of China.Overseas tendency in studies of collocation falls into three categories according to their theoretical framework:the lexical composition approach, the semantic approach and the structural approa ch.While each area has its own achievements, the third one recently h as methodologically extended its study area by involving grammatical c ollocation into its collocation research field, and then analyzed its collocative patterns, thereby providing more systemic theological meth od for the study of collocation.Domestically, there were relatively f ewer studies for this concept and when it comes to its practical aspec t they were mostly from lexicological perspective, but recently they b ecome more intensified and diversified showing a growing attention. In the third chapter,we try to give more accurate definition to t he collocation. After taking all the academic views about this concept into consideration,we can reach this temporary conclusion:the collo cation is the restricted co-occurrence between words which are semanti cally and syntactically correlated with each other in the meaning of t hat a certain word requires another. And the collocational meaning is not a summation of the compositional meaning,it has a mutative meanin g based on the summation of the compositional meaning which means a co llocation consists of a selecting word(selector)and selected words (selectee),and the former necessarily requires the latter. Therefore, there are interdependent characteristics between compositions of the collocation. The following seven major characteristics will be discuss ed in this chapter:1)collocations formed by unilateral selection,2) collocations with high mental prominence,3)collocations related wit h specific meanings,4)syntactic construction of the collocations dep ended on semantic meaning,5)collocation with unstable position,6)c ollocations rely on language community,7)the structure of collocatio n with unpredictability. And we further differentiate some relative co ncepts such as chunk, colligation and concordance. In the fourth chapter,we attemptde to analyze《Collocation Dictio nary of Modern Chinese》and《Usage Dictionary》these two dictionaries. In the fifth chapter, based on the definition and the features abo ve,we analyze the collocational structure of the 282 level 1 verbs de signed for HSK.Furthermore, the syntactic and lexicological criteria for the differentiation which proposed in the third chapter can be app lied to deepen our understanding:Collocation is composed of two words, and there are some restrictions regarding how those collocated two wo rds are arranged,by which one composition word selects another syntac tically. In this situation, the selector is also called core word, and whether this core word can be used independently or other than in the collocation structure directly refers to the transparency of the mean ing.In the sixth chapter,we investigate the semantic properties of co llocational structures, focusing on the semantic relation of verbs. It has been overemphasized that the collocations involve the paradigmati c change in meaning, even though they are basically syntagmatic constr uctions. The verbs of collocations show the special semantic relations such as homonymy, antonymy and hyponymy.
