The research of lexis is an important component in the study of the history of Chinese. However, the current study of lexis is still very backward, compared with the research of speech sounds and grammar. Especially the research on lexis of one book is still rare. The former researches on special book were some proses of pre-Qin and Tang Song's. And it is really rare to make the novel form as the research main body. Speaking as embodied in the novel characteristics compared with other stytle is more clear-cut. This paper which based on such reality attempts to make thorough research on "Popular Romance of the Three Kingdoms". We hope we can verify its basic situation and characteristics which have a contribution to Chinese lexis history's research.On the basis of the "Popular Romance of the Three Kingdoms" with more than 700,000 words which was published in 1980 by Shanghai Ancient Books Publishing House, we do close research on one syllable words, two-syllable words and multi-syllable words. The key point of this paper lies in the classification research of the basic lexis and the general lexis of special book, the research of new words and words with new meanings, and the paradigmatic relations and syntagmatic relations of meaning.There are six chapters in the paper, in which introduction occupies one chapter, the body part occupies five chapters.Chapter 1 introduction: It mainly tells the current condition, the meaning, the contents and the methods of the subject of the study. And then is the general picture of the lexical system of "Popular Romance of the Three Kingdoms".Chapter 2 lexical constitution of "Popular Romance of the Three Kingdoms": It mainly describes the lexical systerm constitution of this book. We use exhaustive enumeration method to study the basic lexis; and the general lexis which includes the inherent words inherited from the history of Chinese, the ancient words and the foreign words.Chapter 3 Disyllabic words in "Popular Romance of the Three Kingdoms": The key point lies in the syntax and semantic relationship analysis of compound words, which analyzes the relationship of its internal morpheme meanings mainly under the traditional grammar structure frame; and the analysis of simple words.Chapter 4 Polysyllabic words in "Popular Romance of the Three Kingdoms": In this chapter, we do specific research on polysyllabic words, including trisyllabic words and quadrisyllabic words. We focus on the statistical analysis and classification research of idioms.Chapter 5 New words and words with new meanings in "Popular Romance of the Three Kingdoms": We take "Grand Chinese Dictionary" as a reference book on the research of these new words and words with new meanings in this book. We take the theory of modern linguistics to analyze the morphemes with specific statistical data explanation.Chapter 6 Paradigmatic relations and syntagmatic relations of meaning: The basic standpoint of this chapter is glosseme rather than word. It altogether divides into two, first is the paradigmatic relations of meaning. We take the Semantic Field Theory of modern linguistics to study these aggregation groups which reflect the main content of the book and the characteristics of the times, mainly including classification field, synonyms and antonyms. Next are the syntagmatic relations of meaning.
