How to sculpture three dimensional objects on two dimensions is an urgent problem that many artists have been attempting to resolve for hundreds and thousands of years. With the development of man's abilities to know nature and depicture nature, people have become more and more experienced in the techniques of space expression. With the development of western art ,the contemporary painting paid attention to picture and ignored traditional method of western painting .It does not show the contemporary painting need not spatial depiction .On the contrary ,they began to try to depict space with basic language of painting such as line, surface, rhythm and brushwork. Modern painting didn't negate spatial conception of traditional paintings and replaced it with a kind of depiction of shallow space. It proved that spatial form of modern painting became more enriched, although its spatial depiction became decreased .(Super-Realism, Magic painting and Optical Art used more spatial forms. ) In the new fields ,there are more diversifications in spatial depiction such as spatial overlap, spatial movement, spatial seep and spatial incision. Now ,the methods of traditional depiction of space is inherited and developed.Modern painting became weaker on depiction of deep space. They organized picture with depiction of shallow space . Painting changed to art of illustration from traditional art of narration . In the impulse of new methods ,it's not a final goal of an artist which make an accurate single space on picture .and its goal is to pursue a comfortable vision and multiplicable forms which be made by depiction of complicated space .This paper examines the major revolutions which occur in the techniques of space expression in painting and the modes of thought in the history of art creations. And it draws a developing line of the space's techniques of painting including perspective ,shadow and color. Based on this line, the author summarizes the ideas and techniques of expression in fine arts from the primitive society, the Ancient Egypt, the Ancient Greece, the Ancient Rome, Renaissance, the European paintings of the 17th and 18th century, to the currents of modernism of 20th century. This is the field that few have ever touched before. So the paper gives a new perspective on the pluralistic concept of development in spatial depiction of western modernism paintings. Simultaneously the author compares the typical paintings of different historical period and analyzes their representative spatial depiction techniques. In the end, the author has a further discussion on the new skills of spatial depiction in the range of shallow depiction which link to artistic creation and modern arts.
