| Semantics is a young discipline. Comparing with phonology, grammar and other subjects it is much younger. It didn't come out until 1920's and 1930's. The study of semantics in China began even much later, not to mention its achievements. The first monograph on Chinese semantics was published by Beijing University in 1990's. Since then several monographs on semantics have been published. This thesis formed its theoretical foundation on the basis of structural semantics, modern linguistic philosophy and syntactical semantics.The target of semantic study is the language semantic system. How to study semantics is really a problem because it is difficult to be quantized and it lacks form as its form basis. This thesis boldly puts forward the idea that Chinese semantics study cannot use western semantic theory as its measurement because it involves the affirmation of Chinese morphemic meaning and word meaning. This thesis expounds that the structural form of Chinese form-sound characters determines the breeding mode of Chinese morphemic meaning. The thesis states that this point is the one of the biggest differences between Chinese semantics and western semantics.From the point of view of the form of Chinese word meaning, the theoretical foundation of form-sound characters results in the phenomenon of systemic heteromorphosis homonyms. This has caused the Chinese morphemes to be open in the surface of form and meaning. This compound disyllablized form made up of form, sound and meaning as"certain form"of Chinese word meaning is quite different in nature from the pure disyllables such as Chinese words consisting of two characters, often alliterated or rhymed. This makes Chinese lexicalization has changed in nature. This unique phenomenon of language and written form is the form basis of determining Chinese morpheme meaning and word meaning. This way of Chinese word-formation is different from the western word-formation mode of linear compound of sound and meaning. The Chinese one is a kind of ultralinear mode of meaning and semantic field. This thesis will also touch upon the classification and types, semantic basic meaning and its analysis, semantic paradigmatic system, composition of semantic units and the meaning and form of the language.Cases such as the difference of systemic semantic form and of the constitution mechanism of semantic form, difference of unique multiplying mode of Chinese morphemic meaning, difference of Chinese and western languages in word-formation mode of lexical semantic field and difference of semantic subfield can be interpreted as the reflection of difference of language structural principle, mode and types. And this is the most important characteristic of the thesis which is quite different from the view held by the book of Chinese Semantics.Many issues in Chinese semantics are nowadays hot spots and difficult points. The author of this thesis effectively utilizes her previous materials and knowledge to further analyze and expound a lot of problems concerning semantics, such as meaning groups, semantic combination, syntactic semantic category, syntactic semantic function and predicate structure and so on. She puts forward some more concrete and deeper views on them. And meanwhile, the thesis puts forward the idea of"Mode of Chinese semantic category system."The author of the thesis tries hard to combine macrosemantics with microsemantics, structural semantics with syntactical semantics, scientificity and logic of classical semantic theory with Chinese semantic phenomenon and fact. We admit that it's not at all easy to make it since it will be restricted by subjective and objective conditions. The aim of this thesis is to observe the Chinese semantic phenomenon and facts in a comparatively all-round, deep and systemic way. And to reveal the laws of semantics study so as to give a satisfactory explanation of the existing theory and laws.
