Revolutionary Political Criticism

This dissertation endeavors to make a deep investigation on the theory of the aesthetic ideology of Terry Eagleton, who is the British literary theorist, so that we can reveal its unique epistemology, methodology and its feature theme as"the revolutionary political criticism". In doing that, we hope to provide the reference on how to the literary criticism intervene in the social reality.The Ideology of the aesthetic of Terry Eagleton views the ideology as the breakthrough point, the deep complexion between the literary text, the literary criticism, the aesthetic, the cultural political text and ideology as the criticism field. It establishes the intervention between the criticism and political reality through the multiply mixture in which the internal contradiction or the internal crack. Not only reveals the hidden ideology passwords, but explores the liberation revolutionary force in the point of deconstruction and establishes his political standpoint. So the dissertation judges that the feature theme of the aesthetic ideology of Terry Eagleton is"the revolutionary political criticism"."The political criticism"in my dissertation mainly refers to the attitude and position of the criticism to the organization methods of the production and power relations in the social reality. Different criticism has the different political quality. In this dissertation, the word"revolution"includes three-tier meaning: the Marxist revolutionary intent, the critical method of"deconstruction"and the access of revolutionary potential after the deconstruction."The revolutionary political criticism"of Terry Eagleton is a kind of the political expression and the establishment of research position about a social revolution and human liberation. When this position and perspective intervenes in the specific cultural phenomena and political life, it will form a unique cultural political practice.This dissertation is composed of three parts: introduction, text and conclusion. The Introduction mainly introduces the development of theory of Terry Eagleton and the respective about my dissertation.The body consists of five chapters. Chapter One starts from the origin of the ideology and the original text of Marx, and analyses the strategic understanding to the concept of the ideology of Terry Eagleton. Through his creation, the ideology that composed of multiple construction makes a strong tool of political criticism.Chapter Two analyses the theoretical system of"Science of the Text", which starts from literature text and cores in"the production of ideology". Eagleton endeavors to construct dynamic construction between literature and ideology in order to expose the construction of ideology in specific historical context. Therefore the ideological criticism of the traditional Marxist makes an effective tool of the political practice.Chapter Three analyses the establishment of"the revolutionary political criticism"in the face of the new historical circumstances. On the base of the acceptance of Benjamin, Terry Eagleton proposes the logical point of the criticism. He makes the connection between the criticism and the real politics through deconstruction and construction in the multiply mixture of the aesthetic ideology discourse. A series of books after Walter Benjamin, or, Towards a Revolutionary Criticism,"the revolutionary political criticism"is established. He builds up"deconstruction"as the method, demonstrations the political quality of the criticism, proposes clearly the revolutionary"Rhetoric"as the critical strategy and forms polemical style.Chapter Four and Chapter Five analyses the critical practice of the aesthetic ideology of Terry Eagleton after the forming the unique critical method.Chapter Four analyses the political explanation to the aesthetic ideology of Terry Eagleton.
