Toru Takemitsu is one of the most representative Asian composers of the mid-20th century. He spans over the eastern and western music cultural traditions, and has formed his own composing style. The study to his unique music language, especially to his harmonic technique, is undoubtedly an important part of the further study of his composing technique, which will also contribute a lot to the composing theories and practices of the contemporary Chinese music.The dissertation is composed of three parts: the first part, systematically summarizes the use of pitch organizing materials (such as the note row and the scale), the chord structure, harmonic sequence as well as the treating methods to the harmonic color and tension. Through the analysis to the harmonic technique of his representative works, the dissertation reveals how his works formed the unique harmonic language in the background of merging the modern times with the tradition, the dialogue between the eastern and the western. The second part, analyzing and studying his three works of different periods. And the third part, systematically elaborates the harmonic techniques of the 20th century, such as, the relativity of consonant and dissonant harmonic sounds, the control of the harmonic tension, personal pursuit to the harmonic color, irrational procession of the melody sequences, the structural layout of non-functional harmony and so on. Further exploring the relations of Toru Takemitsu's music composing, the eastern and western music tradition, as well as other composers ofthe time. And know the inheritance and creativity of his harmonic technique.In conclusion, this paper explains how Toru Takemitsu, as an oriental composer who had a complicated cultural background, broke through ethnic limitations and emerging into the world music through the analysis to his harmonic technique and relative comparable studies. It also shows how Takemitsu insured the unique status of his style in the immensity of schools of music.
