This dissertation deals with the system and individual characteristics of Mandarin collective classifier under theories of cognitive linguistics. The study not only can enrich the researching of Chinese classifier but also can corroborate and replenish the cognitive theory.The first part we summarize history and actuality in the research approaches of collective classifier, introduce and explain the categorization theory, observe and study the collective classifier holistically, describe and explain the grammatical attributes of them. According to the contradiction principle, we analyze and explain the station of collective classifier in the system of classifier. According to the principle of combination of form and meaning, we put forward the determined standards of collective classifier, then summarize and define the definition, nature, scope, classes of collective classifier. According to typical principle, we distinguish the typical collective classifier and the untypical collective classifier. As for the grammatical attributes of collective classifier, we describe the combination and overlapping and try to explain them in cognitive views.The second part we study the individual characteristics of collective classifier include series of collective classifier, pairs of collective classifier and individual collective classifier. This part discusses the individual characteristics of typical collective classifier. Series of collective classifier include even numbers classifier, Hang shaped classifier and Die shaped classifier. Each sorts of classifier is a system in some standard and view, but they also have some differences in each system. We depict these differences and analyze the choices between the classifier and the nouns. Pairs of collective classifier include Pi and Qun, Zu and Tao, Cong and Cu, Shu and Kun. Each pair of classifiers has some differences in basic semantic meaning and extending semantic meaning. These differences are the cognitive and the semantic foundation of the classifiers. Individual collective classifier can be studied from categorization view. The classifiers include Fu, Chuan, Dui, Ba, Bao, Shu, we analyze these classifiers in categorization view. This part is the typical case about categorization analysis.This dissertation has many innovations: Firstly, depiction of new linguistic facts. We describe and find some Chinese collective classifier facts, analyze syntax attributes and semantic attributes of them, then find some laws of syntax and semantic of collective classifier on the basic of facts. Secondly, application and confirmation of cognitive linguistics theories. We take semantics as a starting point of research; analyze all aspects of collective classifier on the basic of semantics, especially apply categorization theory to some collective classifiers, reveal their semantic relationship from the synchronic view and confirm them with the proofs of diachronic and typology. Thirdly, exploration and attempt new research modes of classifier. Under the guidance of cognitive linguistics, we build some research modes of classifier from semantic and cognitive views, for example, in the principle of distributional description and cognitive explanation, establish systemic research model of classifier. In the aspect of individual characteristics, we use the method of contrast and categorization separately and establish individual research model. Finally, promotion and impulse of applied linguistics. This dissertation can promote and improve practical applications of collective classifier, such as in the education of primary and secondary schools, in the teaching Chinese as a foreign language, in the dictionary codification, etc.
