In the history of Chinese drama, along with the translations and introductions of foreign drama, many adaptations of foreign drama have appeared. Generally speaking the adapted texts are focused in the three periods, which are the period of Wenmingxi, the 1920s period and the period of the 1930s to 1940s. The adapted text performed a very important role in the writing of modern drama in China. The spirit of patriotism and enlightment represented by the adaptations broke the feudal atmosphere and they also did important explorations on how to cope with the conflicts between foreign and native culture stream re and how to combine the two different culture. But in long time there exists a problem in the field of theatre, that is neglecting the importance of adaptations, which causes the lack of a full and whole research on them. Although the adaptations is not the mainstream in the introductions of foreign drama, yet in the current context the method has still very important provoking significance in how to translate and introduce foreign drama. Besides the preface and conclusion the paper is divided into three chapters.The first chapter with the title"Background and Status of the Adaptations", which is divided into three parts. In the first part which focus on the adaptations in Wenmingxi period illustrates the appearance of adaptations of Japanese new-style drama and Shakespearean drama by Chunliu school in the cultural context with the traditional literature as the centre. The second part focuses on the adaptations in the 1920s, which develops the adaptations by the amateur theatre organizations such as Shanghai Theatre Society, Fudan Theatre Club and Nankai New theatre Club in the translated literature-centred condition. The third part is about the adaptations in the 1930s to 1940s. This part is divided into two sections and one is about the left-wing adaptations, the adaptations by the experimental theatre practice in Ding District Hebei Province and the professional theatre companies such as China Traveling Troupe in the left- wing literature period, the other is about the adaptations in the non-occupied area in the beginning of the anti-Janpanese War and that in the Island and Occupied Period.The second chapter is about the choice of the texts which is divided into two parts. In the first part the influence of the mainstream ideology that is the manipulations of patriotism and enlightment on the choice of texts is illustrated. In the second part the mainstream poetics'influence on the choice of texts. In these two parts romanticism and realism's influences on the choice of texts in the Wenmingxi Period and modern drama period is respectively developed with the driving effect on the writing of theatre of that age included.In the third chapter the strategies of the adaptations are explained which is divided into three parts. The first part is about the strategy of nationalization in adaptations which is made based on greater changes of the original texts. The second part is about the strategy of being loyal to the original texts which maintains the basic plots with the names of characters and places nationalized. The third part is about the spiritually nationalized strategy which maintains the foreign styles of the original texts. Through the specific analysis of the three strategies in the respect of contents, forms and styles the reasons why the strategies are used is explained with the significance behind the strategies included.
