This study aims to discuss the origin and significance of the representation ofspace characterized by representational subject and pictorial subject in Westernpaintings. Pictorial space by representational subject refers to the representative spaceunder the perspective rules of the Renaissance, while pictorial space by pictorialsubject refers to the constructive space where content is completely embedded in formas originated by Cezanne. Through an examination of the affinities and differences ofthese two approaches by analyzing and comparing the various methods in spacerepresentation of Western paintings at different stages, it is expected that a newunderstanding of the way visual activities are related to the proactivity of spacerepresentation and time in painting process can be obtained, as well as a newrevelation of the significance of human existence in the process of construction ofpictorial space and its relevance to modern painting practice.
