By comparing a great number of Yintui (a seal work imprinted on thepaper) of ancient Chinese seals and the real objects and referring to plentyof literature, the article vertically put Chinese seals in history into threestages chronologically, i.e., remote ancient times, middle ancient times,and recent ancient times; and horizontally classified seals to official sealand private seal for the research.By studying the seals in Chinese history, describing their characters andartistic quality and through a comparative study on Chinese and Westernseals, the article summarized the common features between Chinese sealsand Western art in the hope of integrating Chinese seal art with the worldart category. The article also brought up new ideas in the conclusion.The article tried to introduce in modern design art theory so that the oldoriental art can be a part of the world and our times. For such purpose, thearticle brought up two ideas in the postscript: 1. seal cutting can learnfrom art expression form of other nationalities; 2. the characters cut onthe seal shall not be limited to Chinese characters; 3. without goingagainst the traditional structure rules, cutting rules and aesthetics ofChinese seals, seals should have more modern significance. By updatingthe three ideas, the author hoped more people of different nationalitieswill accept and like seal.
