Han Chinese Personal Pronouns Comparative Study

This thesis, consisting of five parts, demonstrates a contradistinctive analysis of the personal pronouns of modern Korean and modern Chinese in such aspects as Word Meaning Characteristics, Applicable Domain, Pragmatic Functions, Restrictions, Ellipsis and etc.Chapter One Introduction. This part briefly introduces the object to discuss in this thesis, the phase that we have reached currently, the significance of this research, principles and approach that we take. This part also concerns about the issues on the stages of both the History of Korean Language and the History of Chinese Language, and, the sources of raw materials of language.Chapter Two A Contradistinctive Analysis of First Personal Pronoun in Korean and Chinese. This part demonstrates the general analysis of and comparison between Korean and Chinese in Word Meaning Characteristics and usage on the basis of distinguishing the singular form and plural form of first personal pronouns. Especially the analysis of the plural forms of first personal pronouns in the two languages, including inclusiveness/exclusiveness, individuality/collectiveness, modesty/non-modesty, marked/unmarked, describes the common characteristics and uniqueness of the plural form of the first personal pronouns.Chapter Three A Contradistinctive Analysis of Second Personal Pronoun in Korean and Chinese .This part demonstrates a stationary analysis of the marked and unmarked usage of second personal pronouns in both Korean and Chinese, and, highlights the respective features reflected in the restriction of dynamic switching through the different forms of second personal pronouns.Chapter Three A Contradistinctive Analysis of Third Personal Pronoun in Korean and Chinese .This part describes the meaning characteristics of personal pronouns, especially for the third personal pronouns in Korean, and defines the sub-classifications. This part also discusses the different forms in meaning and applicable domain. On the basis of this, this part further shows the usage and restriction contained in the on-site exophoric reference, non-on-site anaphoric reference and other dialogue structures and narrative structures, and tries to summarize the common characteristics and uniqueness of the third personal pronouns. Chapter Four Exploration to the restriction to Ellipsis in Korean and Chinese. This part takes the quantitative and qualitative approach to get the statistical data about the usage and ellipsis of personal pronouns in different conversational structures. And, this part explores the reasons for the restriction to the ellipsis of personal pronouns through the internal structure, internal structure plus external structure and external structure. In this process, this part highlights the common characteristics and uniqueness of the third personal pronouns.The last part gives the conclusion and summarizes the achievement and defect in this essay.
