On Gauguin's Influence Upon Maugham's Novels

The integration of literature and painting has always remained in the academic spotlight.How do the art of space and the art of time cooperate with one another has generated countless critics' interest. They hold different opinions on this topic.The dissertation is "On Gauguin' s Influence upon Maugham and His Novels" It is an endeavor to review the British novelist' s work from an interdisciplinary perspective.The whole article begins with finding historical evidence to prove Maugham' s unfailing interest in Gauguin and his paintings alike. After the thorough investigation on Maugham and Gauguin' s biography, letters and autobiography,the author of this thesis puts forward her hypothesis:the theme,the characters and the narrative technique of Maugham' s novels,together with Maugham' s aesthetic views receives considerable influence from Gauguin and his paintings.The dissertation provides a whole new perspective for the present Maugham research in China, and also offers a sound prove for the integration theory of literature and painting.
