The oil painting courses offered by Konstantin M. Maksimov played an important rolefor teaching practice in the development of Chinese realism oil paintings. After thefounding of the People's Republic of China, this style of oil paintings coincided verywell with the new national spirits and cultural demands. Along with the standardizationof the national educational system and the need for professional development, theMinistry of Culture of China invited Konstantin M. Maksimov, a professor of theformer Soviet Union Surikov Academy of Fine Arts, to offer oil painting classes inChina. Its aim was to train professionals for realism oil paintings as well as to educateart professors for higher education.Chinese oil painting has always had a profound association with the development ofChina's social reality and the mainstream ideologies. In the early twentieth century,because of the practical needs from Chinese society, Realism oil painting graduallyrevealed its role in such times. After the founding of the People's Republic, existingrealism oil paintings were combined with the social concepts, along with theintroductions of oil painting techniques from the former Soviet Union, and Chinese oilpaintings developed into unprecedented scale and high standard. Meanwhile, theeducation of oil painting also flourished, and the educational impact on thedevelopment of Chinese oil paintings was enormous, in other words, this period ofcreative achievements of Chinese oil paintings were the fruits of the educationaldevelopment of Chinese oil paintings.This paper starts by analyzing the teaching contents of the oil painting classes offeredby Konstantin M. Maksimov, and explores various aspects of issues surrounding theteaching styles, in order to achieve a real outline of the historical development of oilpainting. This paper explains how the teaching principles of Maksimov can betransformed into modern language, and be compared with modern and contemporaryworks of art. Through these approaches, this paper aims to further analysis of oilpainting of the former Soviet Union, and provide premises for further studies. Thispaper also traces the development of realism tradition in the West, particularly through teaching contents and examples of courses offered by Maksimov, to gain acomprehensive understanding of his art in a larger historical context. The author of thispaper also practices and teaches oil paintings, and therefore, can utilize the language ofprofessional practice in art, and situate oil painting education into the core contexts ofWestern oil paintings' theories and practices. By exploring the characteristics of oilpainting and combined with specific teaching examples, this paper aims to go beyondvague comments and simply cumulating materials. Basing on analyzing the oil trainingclass of Maksimov, the paper tries to release the influence and significance fromeducation and creation of oil painting. On the one hand, the oil training class ofMaksimov had historical rationality. On the other hand, the class has its contemporarysignificance.
