One unique element of Chinese Shanshui painting lies in its very significance in"image"."Image"is greatly valued by Shanshui painting either in its most basic expression form or through the spiritual connotation that is treasured in a much higher level. What this thesis touches upon here are two items that are related to"image". They are image shaping and image coloring.Beginning with the two main Shanshui painting coloring systems, namely the blue-and-green coloring and the pale-color coloring, the thesis systematically analyzed the problem of Shanshui painting's coloring on the basis of image shaping. It made studies not only into its philosophical basis, but also on the various colored Shanshui paintings from ancient to contemporary time. Close analysis was carefully conducted on every single work of both the blue-and-green Shanshui and the pale-color Shanshui systems. Thus the thesis came to a summary that the former is characterized by its feature of painting in a freehand way, while the latter considers light color fascinating and is particular about carrying a sense of charm.In Chinese Shanshui painting, what is always pursued on the level of techniques is how to let ink and color be not in the way of each other, while at the same time penetrate into each other. Meanwhile, on the level of visual effect, whether the using of color and ink can well blend becomes a perfect state of a work. Paying special attention to the small space formed by ink and color as well as the overall layout on a painting, Chinese Shanshui makes every effort to balance the delicate relations between ink, color and space, and try to better convey its creation idea of building atmosphere with coloring.I humbly hope that this thesis, having carried researches on image coloring, would offer a view to contemporary Chinese Shanshui on how to build atmosphere on the painting.
