Based on the existent studies, Research 1 established the Airline Flight Trait Subscale. Moreover, based on the structured interview, the Airline Flight Working Situation Personality Subscale was developed. The two preceding subscales were jointly named as the Personality Scale for Airline Pilots. In terms of the two subscales, the following sample was adopted to implement Item Analysis and Exploratory Factor Analysis: 1132 male participants in the preliminary inspections of the potential pilots for the China Southern Airlines. First-order factor analysis indicated that Airline Flight Trait was composed of Stability Factor, Boldness Factor, Activeness Factor and Anxiety Factor, while Airline Flight Working Situation Personality was composed of Situation Adaptation Factor, Cooperation and Communication Factor, Independent Decision-making Factor and Management and Dominance Factor. Second-order factor analysis showed that Flight Trait and Situation Personality were separated; furthermore, the accumulative interpretation rate was 64.105%. Confirmatory Factor Analysis was conducted on the sample consisting of 518 participants in the re-examinations, which indicated that there was a relatively favorable goodness of fit index with regard to the data from the two-dimensional model composed of Flight Trait and Working Situation Personality.Adopting 286 active pilots and 112 grounded pilots as the research subjects, Research 2 tested the reliability and validity of the currently-developed Personality Scale for Airline Pilots. The results demonstrated that the construct validity, criterion validity and reliability of the preceding scale were good. Moreover, the results revealed that the two kinds of personality characteristics of airline pilots were both detached and coordinated; the differences in the Airline Flight Working Situation Personality could cause the grounding; the correlation between Working Situation Personality and flight hours was stronger.Research 3 discussed the influences of Airline Flight Trait and Airline Flight Working Situation Personality on the Standardization of the Aviation Behaviors during the Airline Flight and the Annual Flight Performance. The results revealed that both the Standardization of the Aviation Behaviors during the Airline Flight and the Annual Flight Performance could be regarded as reliable appraisal indices for the work performance of airline flight; Airline Flight Trait and Working Situation Personality could predict the preceding two appraisal indices independently; the predictive validity of Working Situation Personality was higher; the influences of Airline Flight Trait on the Standardization of the Aviation Behaviors during the Airline Flight and the Annual Flight Performance were fully mediated by Working Situation Personality.Research 4 investigated the influences of Airline Flight Trait and Airline Flight Working Situation Personality on Job Satisfaction. The results revealed that both Airline Flight Trait and Airline Flight Working Situation Personality could influence Job Satisfaction directly. Moreover, Airline Flight Trait could also influence Job Satisfaction through influencing Airline Flight Working Situation Personality; the predictive validity of Airline Flight Working Situation Personality was higher.Research 5 examined the influences of Airline Flight Trait and Airline Flight Working Situation Personality on Mental Health. The results revealed that the predictive validity of Airline Flight Trait was higher. Furthermore, the influences of Airline Flight Trait and Mental Health were partially mediated by Airline Flight Working Situation Personality.In summary, the preceding research results indicate that both Airline Flight Trait and Airline Flight Working Situation Personality are important components of the personality construct of airline pilots. Furthermore, with regard to the selection of modern airline pilots, Airline Flight Working Situation Personality was more pertinent. To a large extent, the series of studies can solve the following long-term problems regarding the personality-based airline pilot selection: culture adaptation, weak situation pertinence of contents etc. It is theoretically meaningful and applicably valuable to improve the psychological selection system of Chinese airline pilots.
