'"gezhi', Compilation Of The Enlightenment, And Modern Science In China

In 1876, the first Chinese scientific and technological periodical——Ko-chih hui-pien, was published in Shanghai, whose editor in chief was well-known Englishman named John Fryer. The Magazine was read so widely that contributed greatly to spreading science and technology in China. Thus, the Magazine is worthy of systematical and intensive study. Except that introduction and conculsion, this paper is divided into five parts as follows:Chapter one, discussed John Fryer's early experiences in China, namely, his educational background, frustrations, experiences of teaching in schools and running a newspaper, which made preparations (including his excellent Chinese,interests created in spreading science in China and experiences) for running the future magazine.Chapter two, based in previous studies, summarized the publishing background of Ko-chih hui-pien, the relationship between chief editor and other authors, and Fryer's efforts to popularize his Magazine.Chapter three, carefully discussed the content of the Magazine including idiographic scientific and technological knowledge and their original texts and authors.Chapter four, made an intensive study of two representative texts——"Introduction to the sciences" and "Entomology for beginners" in the Magazine and and put forward my own viewpoint.Finally, rebuild the influence of the Chinese Scientific and Industrial Magazine during the late Qing Dynasty in mass media dissemination. As the language in the Magazine is simple to understand, and the content is abundant and elegant, it is easy accepted by the reading public.I also discussed the dissemination of the Magazine was spread in Korea, the United States and Great Britain.
