Korea's modern novel theory has accomplished important reform under the historic missions of resistance against foreign invasion and modernization of the nation. It is a reflection of the self-adjustment of Korea's traditional literary theory to the social ideological renovation trend, and is also inseparable from the influence and motivation of western learning and other external forces. Among all the external forces that have impacted on Korea's modern novel theory, LIANG Qichao has been considered to be an indispensable crucial factor that has promoted the transformation of Korea's traditional novel theory into modern novel theory. The research method of comparative literature has been adopted in this thesis and related articles and novels published in the newspapers and magazines from Korea's "Kabo Reform" (the reforms started from the year 1894, which is the year of Kabo or "Jiawu" in Chinese) to the time that Korea became a colony of Japan have been used as the main object of study. Through in-depth analysis and research, the thesis has endeavored to reveal the "road map" of the concept innovation of Korea's modern novel, to excavate the internal relationship between LIANG Qichao's novel theory and the theoretical innovation of Korea's modern novel, and to illustrate the motivation of the innovation of Korea's modern novel theory. This thesis is composed of an introduction and a five-chapter text. The introductory chapter has highlighted the necessity, significance and scope of this research topic, as well as the research methods and creativity of this study. In the first chapter of "Korea's modern social and cultural thoughts", Korea's modern historic and political situation and the impact of the introduction of foreign civilization as a trend of times on Korea's reform in political, ethnic and language concepts and the rising of "Doctrine of New People" have been discussed in an attempt to outline the ideological and cultural background of Korea's modern novel theory innovation. The second chapter, "Korea's modern age and LIANG Qichao", has proceeded from LIANG's view of Korea and traced the scope of influence and channel of circulation of LIANG's works in Korea, aiming at analyzing the relationship between the influence and acceptance of LIANG's theory and the sphere of Korea's modern thought through different aspects, including the advocacy of patriotic ideas, promotion of "Doctrine of New People", appealing for the creation of national spirit, alerting the danger of a nation's extinction, introduction of western academic thought, emphasizing on people's education, and etc. The third chapter, "the influence of LIANG Qichao to the enlightenment of Korea's modern novel theory", elaborates LIANG's novel theory as a key external force of Korea's modern novel theory innovation. This chapter analyses the comparative influence of the European, Japanese, Chinese and LIANG's novels and novel theories to Korea's modern novels, and attempts to reveal the impact of LIANG on Korea's recognition of the instructive effect of novels, understanding of novel's enchantment, attitude to "national novel", and the choosing of enlightening novels. The fourth chapter, "the aesthetic impulsion of Korea's acceptance of LIANG Qichao's novel theory", has thoroughly analyzed the mutual Confucianism background and enlightenment concept shared by LIANG and Korea's modern patriotic enlightenment thinkers and the aesthetic correspondence with LIANG's novel theory from the view of "acceptance screen" and "expectation horizon" of Korea's acceptance of external modern novel theory so as to unveil the fundamental reason for Korea's acceptance of LIANG's novel theory. The fifth and also the final chapter, "LIANG Qichao and the theoretical innovation of Korea's modern novel", further amplifies the important reform of Korea's traditional novel theory in modern age inspired by LIANG's theory and seeks to exploring the profound impact laid on the history of Korea's novel theory development.LIANG Qichao, well-known as a famous politician and enlightenment thinker, has influenced Korea's modern age development and novel theory innovation in a comprehensive, systematic and profound way. This thesis focuses on the gaps and unsolved problems in the current research and seeks to describe the overall impact of LIANG to Korea's modern enlightenment theory on the basis of abundant historical material study and thorough analysis. The main purpose and the creativity of this study is to objectively evaluate the key factor of LIANG in the innovation of Korea's modern novel theory and excavate the fundamental reason of Korea's acceptance of LIANG's novel theory as well as it's significant impact on the history of Korea's novel theory development.
