A Study Of Patriotic Literature In Korea

Taking the patriotic literature in the civilized period of Korea as the object of study, from the perspective of patriotism theory, this thesis will focus on patriotism performance in literature of this period, by using historical and documentary analysis as well as other research methods. This thesis will also define the scope of patriotic literature in the civilized period, in order to show that volitions of national resistance & civilization and enlightenment are the centers of patriotic literature.This thesis consists of six chapters.Chapter One is the brief introduction of this thesis.Chapter Two examines the relationship between patriotism and patriotic literature, and introduces the generated etymology of "patriotism". This chapter also analyzes the originally emotional foundation of patriotism on the basis of nature and society, and the specific performance of patriotism reflected in patriotic literature.Chapter Three introduces historical background of the formation of patriotic literature namely, it developed in domestic strife and foreign aggression in the changing era. In this period, School of "Justice-defense & Evil-rejecting", School of "civilization and enlightenment" and School of "Oriental learning" put forward their ideological views respectively; enlightenment and innovation were also carried out in education and culture before or after Gabo Reform.Chapter Four arranges patriotic literature in the civilized period on the whole. Taking volitions of national resistance & civilization and enlightenment as the main lines, this chapter will analyze specific performances of these two volitions at that time in different literary genres and literary works in detail.Chapter Five analyzes the influence of patriotic literature in the civilized period on modern colonial literature. Under the circumstance of losing of sovereignty, patriotic literature representing national resistance and appealing civilization got great development.Chapter Six gives the conclusion of this thesis.Researches of this thesis will help to clarify the relationship between patriotism and patriotic literature in the civilized period of Korea, increase the diversity of Korean literature studies in the civilized period, at the same time provide a reference for modern Korean patriotic literature study.
