Liang Qichao 's Role In The May 4th New Culture Movement

Liang Qichao’s early thought has had a huge influence to the Chinese society at his life time, which we consider that he is the first one in the press circles. By contrast, he is no longer leading the trend of the times in the May 4th New Culture Movement. And people who study him consider that he was a hero at that old time. The May 4th New Culture Movement period is an important part in the transformation of modern Chinese social transition period. What’s more, all kinds of new ideas came into China one after another, the advanced intellectuals wandered and searched for saving the nation from subjugation and ensure at that time. What calls for attention is that, although Liang Qichao is not the character of the May 4th New Culture Movement, he actively involved in this and also accepted the baptism of new ideas. Last but not least, he had a deep influence for scholars at that time and made a huge contribution for the preparation, process and development of the May 4th New Culture Movement. No matter from the enlightenment of ideology and culture or the patriotism aspect, Liang Qichao has a deep-rooted relationship with the May 4th New Culture Movement.By looking at Liang Qichao in the May 4th New Culture Movement period historically and concretely, there are lots of important theoretical and practical significance. By this, this article has attempted to make analysis on the relationship between Liang Qichao and the May 4th New Culture Movement from every aspect, and observe the evolution and development of his thought. At the same time, this article expects to define roles for Liang Qichao clearly in this period and provide reference for acquainting Liang Qichao in his old age deeply.This article is divided into three parts, which are introduction, main text and conclusion.The introduction explains the reasons for choosing this topic, the significance of research and a brief description of research, also demonstrates the article’s scientificity and preciseness.The second part includes second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth chapters.Chapter Ⅱ:To expound the influence which is from Liang Qichao’s early thought to Hu Shi, Chen Duxiu, Lu Xun and some scholars’ thought, both to literary enlightenment and revolutionary ideas. Discovering the relationship between the Hundred Days’ Reform the reform movement in late Qing dynasty and the May 4th Patriotic Movement, the May 4th New Culture Movement. Finding Liang Qichao’s efforts to safeguard the interests of the country, and the relationship with Peking University where the May 4th New Culture Movement happened from the history, especially his pivotal effect in the May 4th Patriotic Movement. Last but not least, this chapter proves that Liang Qichao is the kindle of the May 4th Patriotic Movement fuse and the impeller and participant of it.Chapter Ⅳ、Ⅴ:Study Liang Qichao’s thoughts and education activities during the May 4th New Culture Movement. Then through the discussion of other thoughts researches and education activities from Liang Qichao, we can prove that he is not the May 4th New Culture Movement’s protagonist, but he works on it actively and makes huge contributions.Chapter VI:From his different characters in different stages, such as "influencer", "lighter" and "defender and introspectionist", "active participant", we can see that his thought has "constant core" in his "fickle", which is his spirit of patriotism and national salvation.Then we can locate him as a liberal intellectual.The third part is the concluding remark. This part mainly has a brief summary of this research, and points out the deficiencies of the article, then raises some questions in this field for the further research, and futures the research be more deepening and systematic.
