In the second half of the 20th century, electronic music has flourished tremendously creating numerous amounts of compositions. There are significant differences between electronic and traditional music with regard to target of musical analysis:the analysis target of electronic music is mainly focused on the pattern of sound, but target of traditional music is mainly focused on the pattern of musical script. Therefore, composition analysis theory of the traditional music is not suitable to analyze the compositions of electronic music as well. The result of having a shortage of quantifiable analysis methods, such as pitch, rhythm and velocity, creates vital issues that music theorists face in analyzing electronic music compositions. The spirit of this paper comes from Husserl's, a phenomenological master, intentionality theory of artwork. He considers art as a kind of structural existence emphasizing the relational structure of the artwork between subject and conscious object. This is based on the Ontology theory with the elements of substance, form, and existence which was proposed by Husserl's student Ingarden, lngarden presents the structural hierarchy theory for the script with four elements which are voice, semantic, system direction, and expressive object layer. Because sound patterns of electronic music is regarded as the main analysis target for appreciation, this paper uses Hursserl and Ingarden's theories as a base of reference to analyze electronic music and instigates a new theory "hierarchy analysis theory" (HAT) to examine the four layers apparent in electronic compositions: voice media, music vocabulary, system direction, and meaning. The developing condition of the analysis theory between traditional and electronic music compositions, as mentioned in the preface above, will be discussed in three chapters:the first chapter presents the design and the concrete implementation scheme and analysis method of HAT; the second chapter applies HAT in five classical works in different periods which are Concrete Music, Tape Music, Electronic Acoustic Music, Computer Music and Multimedia Music; and the third chapter summarizes the diversity, particularity, and complexity of electronic music analysis and illustrates the practical immediate significance of HAT from the view of postmodern art development.HAT is an open, integrated and creative way of synthesized analysis. As an emerging discipline with the integration of music and technology, as well as theory and practice, electronic music analysis theory currently is confronting many opportunities and challenges. HAT provides a current reference for the development of teaching, composing, and enriching analysis theory of electronic music.
