For the construction of the Chinese socialist modernization, there is a necessity of giving a thorough and summary of the individual emancipation movements in China. Vitality of social development is attributed to, in the end, vitality of individuality. In order to establish person抯 autonomy, bring person抯 initiative and creativity into full play and facilitate the construction of the socialist modernization, as well as to stick to the socialist value principle of free and all-round development of human, it is of important practical significance to make research on the individual emancipation movements in China and understand scientifically the issue of individual emancipation. It is also of important theoretical significance to establish a theoretical system of individual emancipation with Chinese characteristi阺. The formal text of dissertation consists of 9 chapters. Chapter 1 traces the theoretical source of individual emancipation and gives a review of the principal viewpoints of individual emancipation theories put forward by the ideologist of different times in ancient China. It holds that with the development of productivity, the progress of science and technology and the enhancement of level of thinking, ideologists of different periods adopted specified ways to solve the problems they faced, which made the theme of individual emancipation clearer, the content of individual emancipation richer, the thought of individual emancipation deeper and the request for the individual emancipation more urgent. The individual emancipation , the economic development and the social improvement should keep the same track. Chapters 2-9 take the eight influential trends of thoughts on individual emancipation in modern times as a target for research, e.g. the Reformists in Qing Dynasty, the Constitutional Reform and Modernization, the New Democracy, the Revolution of 1911, the New Youth, the Liberalism, Marxism with Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping as its representatives. The chapters expound how the people with the different thoughts understood and had a thorough grasp of the conception of individuality and individual emancipation . They gave an exposition and criticism to the factors that prohibited the development of individual emancipation and conceived plans for the ways to realize individual emancipation . The chapters also give an analysis of the characteristics and contributions that the thoughts made in theory to individual emancipation , and elucidate the positions that the thoughts took in the history of the thought of individual emancipation in China. The conclusion part discloses the primary characteristics of the individual emancipation movements during past 100 years in China. The characteristics are the unity of individual emancipation with nation liberation and class liberation, the unity of individual emancipation with liberation of economy, politics and thought, the unity of the individual emancipation as the means of social development with the individual emancipation as ends of social development, and the unity of the specificity of individual emancipation with the universality of individual emancipation . It is also pointed out in the chapter that there is a necessity of having a new individual emancipation movement in China, but it is still a long way to gain the end.
