The core competence of an economy is technology. The improvement of technology depends on the research and development (R&D) of the economy itself and the absorptions of all kinds of possible technical spillovers. As China joined WTO and the whole world is going into an economy, it is an important channel for China to absorb and utilize the spillovers in effect by international trade. It is out of question that R&D and embodied R&D spillovers by international trade can improve China's economic growth. But which is the mechanism of R&D contributing to economic growth, how to measure the social rate of R&D return, how to determine the optimal R&D expenditure of an economy, Whether all international trade can transmit spillovers, and whether spillovers can be utilized in effect and contributed to the improvement of output and welfare, etc. The answer of these questions relies on a thorough study on the relationships among R&D,embodied technology spillovers by international trade and China's economic growth. The contents and contributions of the dissertation include the following four main parts:1. The signification of R&D,and the analysis on the relationship between R&D and knowledge economy. Based on the analysis on the signification of R&D and relationship between R&D and knowledge economy, R&D actuality of China: the scale, concentricity, style and source of the expenditure of R&D and international compare are discussed. The conclusion show that although China is trying to minish the gap between itself and developed countries on R&D investment, R&D activities and regard of the government, the gap is in existence, and China could not catch up with them in a short period. As a result, no matter that the core knowledge of an economy, the base of innovation-educations ,the hardware of core knowledge and relative persons with ability, the situation of China is knowledge lack. Furthermore, comparing to R&D, it is straighter and faster to enhance the technology and strengthen the ability of competition of an economy that utilizing the technical spillovers. As a result, it is an available path for China to realize the leaping development. The undermentioned research field is put foreword.2. The economics of R&D return. With the theory of endogenous economic growth and game theory, the social return of R&D investment, the optimal R&D expenditure of China and R&D stratagem of China are discussed. The results suggest that China should imitate in the late period and innovate in the long run, some policy suggestions are bring forward in this part.3. The empirical analysis on the spillovers from three industries (First, Second and the third industry) of North America (America and Canada) or Japan to China and their effect on China's economic growth , with CGE (Computable General Equilibrium) model-GTAP ( Global Trade Analysis Project ).The following are the empirical analysis conclusions:(1) The distributing data of China's international trade suggests that the main trade partners of China are Asia and developed countries. From the point of source export countries,North America and Japan are the main country or region.(2) The analysis shows that China's AC for the spillover of North America is 0.509 and 0.634 for that of Japan, the SS between China and North America is 0.3679, the SS between China and Japan is 0.5091. The spillover index from North America and Japan to China is 0.1873 and 0.3228 respectively; as a result, the utility effect to the spillover resourced from Japan of China is better than that of North America.(3) Numerical simulations with the GTAP model show the consequences of our spillover hypothesis in a general equilibrium setting. The simulations show that the effects of technology spillovers on both the innovating and the receiving economies depend on SS and AC. The three sectors spillovers of both North America and Japan can improve China's Hicks-neutral technological progress, but only the third industry can increase the output of same industry of China, and de...
