The prelude to women's emancipation with modern Chinese signification began in Constitutional Reform and Modernization (1898) and during the Revolution of 1911.During the period of the May 4th Movement, the trend of women's emancipation tended to mature and regular ,swept the whole society by inexorable force .On the whole, by the boundary of the May 4th Movement,the trend of women's emancipation may be divided into the two phases witli mutual relation and different characters.The purpose of this thesis is to survey the evolutionary tracks and main contents of the May 4th women's emancipation thoughts .From the publication of the periordical "New Youth" to the eve of the May 4th Movement(namely:the earlier stage of the new culture movement),the trends of women's emancipation thoughts,passing through several-year-dreariness after the Revolution of 1911, vigorously proposed by the New Culture men, flourished again,and took on new rising vision.The forming of the phase was not accidental.As the product of political and economical relationship in modem society,it met the demands of capitalistic economy and a developing new class. It has inherited and developed the trends of women's emancipation thoughts since Wu Xu (1898) .It reflected the objective need of transferring womenfrom inhuman condition too.From the view of the spreading of western theories,it had much to do with abroad propagation of new western thoughts.As far as its quality, the women's emancipation thoughts at the earlier stage of the May 4th Movement is the same as that one during the late ch 'ing ,they belong to the category of the bourgeois democratism. But, the profundity and extent what the radical democrats 'animadvert on feudalism ethic and discours on women's emancipation were unexampled in the late ch 'ing .they had vivid era characters.The May 4th Movement is a great movement anti-imperialism,patriotism and of ideological liberation in modern China.The long-standing discussions on wemen problems were pushed to the historical peak at that time. The various kinds of new thoughts that led women to modernization promoted one another, appeals by men and consciousness of women engendered the trends of women's emancipation that were more overwhelming and effective than that during the earlier stage of the May 4th Movement. women's emancipation not only became one of important thesises that the advanced men prelected and wrote articles,but also became "the heated topics" among the advanced parties and pulic opinion .Compared with the complexion fewer whooped at the earlier stage of the New Culture movement , the women's emancipation thoughts after the May 4th Movement might be extraordinarily splendour and surging forward with great momentum , took on three features [preparatory socialism ; more abroad and profound thoughts;the pluralistic thought pattern;common development current.These features reflected that people renew their pondering and choosing themes of the era,and that renew value tropism under the influence of new trends from world."The October Revolution sends Marxism to China". After theMay 4th Movement,accompanied the abroad spreading of Marxism and its women's thoughts ,the forepart Marxian,such as Ch 'en Tu-hsu and Li Ta -Chao etc.,began to exercise proletarian world view to consider a series of problems such as how to develop women's movement and to realize women's emancipation in the semi-colony semi-feudal society ,brought forward intacter thought system.
