Technology As Purpose

The paper focuses on technological instrumentalism, making a research on the principles of technology and analyzing the approach of understanding and grasping it. it consists of three questions: 1 .the definition of technological instrumentalism;2.the form of intrumentalism;3.the principle and the way to technology. It implies such a proposition that technology is means to end or is human activity, which can be embedded in the sociological, ecological and ethical fields. However, it can't answer what instrumentality is, and what meaning of technology to human being is. So it is necessary to be transcended. This paper insists that understanding of technology must come back to purpose. Technology exists as purpose. The paper consists of eight parts:The first expresses the technological instrumentalism by exploring instrumentalism which belongs to the epistemological field. Primarily, Instrumentalism is notion of epistemology, which means 'theory is instrument'. The 'technological instrumentalism regards technology as instrument of human. It consists of several meanings, technology is value-neutral, means and controlled by human. The relationship between human and technology is divided into purpose and means abstractly.The follow three parts analyze the expression of technological instrumentalism in social, ecological and ethical fields. The second explains modernity, instrumental rationality and phenomenon of reflexivity, their foundation is 'technology as instrument'. The third analyzes instrumentalism in ecological field. The forth explains instrumentalism in ethical field.The fifth analyzes the philosophical foundation and limit of Instrumentalism. This foundation of technological instrumentalism is the proposition, technology is means to end. The instrumental itself means instrument is neutral, passive, so technology express that human is active. But Instrumentalism considers the relationship between human and technology as external purpose, which can't answer the essence of technology in valid.The last three parts explore idea of technology from three views of Purpose, Production and Dasein. They are alternative description to a thing, which is the key idea understanding technology. The sixth refers to purpose is key of understanding technology. The seventh analyzes the meaning of production to technology. The eighth explores the idea of understanding technology, Dasein's being-in-the-world and Being, from Martin Heidegger. The way of Being which equipment possesses leads to Dasein's being-in-the-world and instrumentality leads to Being.Purpose is the foundation of means, production is the foundation of the individual and species, Being is foundation of the present. As idea the nearest to means, purpose was chosen to understand technology. Come back to primary purpose, the transcendence can be attained. So the prejudice of technology is given, purpose.So purpose can be used to understand the essence of technology. Purpose is a free fringe to technology.
