The theory of competence, as an integration of economics and management, is still in its very start without a mature theoretical framework. This thesis is to answer the basic problem of the firm, i.e. the nature of the firm and the boundary of the firm, so as to solidify the economic basis of the theory of competence and develop corresponding approaches for competence management to provide theoretical and practical support to corporate strategy.The research of this thesis is based on the theory of competence, the theory of the firm and the theory of organizational learning. On one hand, it integrated the theory of competence into those traditional theories of the firm to answer the basic problem of firm, i.e. the problem on the nature of the firm and the boundary of the firm, in view of economics. On the other, it integrated the theory of organizational learning into the theory of competence to study the core subject of management, i.e. the competence management. Finally, it tried to apply the outcome from above into the practice of expansion strategy of the firm. The interplay between competence and boundary determines the direction of the expansion of the firm, while the principles of competence management determine the pattern of the expansion.The main outcome of this research is the competence-based theory on the boundary of the firm, which is derived from the integration of the theory of competence and those traditional theories of the firm and puts forward a comprehensive explanation on the nature and the boundary of the firm, and the principles for competence management which makes the firm self-adaptive and growing dynamically. Both theories are especially instructive to the expending boundary strategy of the firm.To put it in detail, there are four aspects of innovation in the thesis as follows: * Updating the traditional theories on the boundary of the firm, such as division of labor, neo-classic firm theory, trasacional cost, sepsific asset and property theory, in view of competence.* Constructing a competence system of the firm to provide basis for competence managemnent, which is derived from Porter's Value-Chain in consideration of the linkage between activities and the competence.Building up a model for the decision on the boundary of the firm according to both the competence of production and the competence of coordination.* Then a competence-based model for the choice of governance structures and a further model for the decision on the dynamic boundary.* Putting forward a diversification strategy based on the dynamically co-related core competences and verifying it by empirical evidences. Analyzing the strategy of M&A and alliance in view of competence and developping some key principles for the success of M&A and alliance.
