Bankers Of China In 1910s-1940s: Pioneers Of Chinese Financial Innovation Thoughts

Since the late of 19th century, Chinese-funded banks modeling after modern western banking institution came forth in China, including not only those co-funded by government and business such as Bank of China and Bank of Communication but also many private-owned commercial banks. Up to 1920s, Chinese modern banks, along with foreign banks and traditional Chinese banks, constituted three rival powers prevailing China's financial market. The development of China's modern bank went with the growth of Chinese bankers, who not only put forward rich financial innovation thoughts, but also made great progress in the bank construction. The bankers referred in the paper are defined as those running and managing such banks as Bank of China, Bank of Communication, "The three major banks in South China" and "The three major banks in North China". To be more exact, they are Zhang jiaao and Song hanzhang with Bank of China, Qian xinzhi with Bank of Communication, Chenguangpu with Shanghai Commercial Savings Bank; Liming with Zhejiang Industrial Bank; Xujiqing with Zhejiang Xingye Bank, Zhouzuomin with Jincheng Bank, Wudingchang with Yanye Bank, Hubijiang with Middle South Bank and Tanlisun with Land Bank. The bankers share the same characteristics in terms of their education background and the region they are born or reared. Born in either Jiangsu or Zhejiang province in the lower reach of Yangtse River, they all had been educated under modern system, with most having the experience of studying abroad and had learned systematically western economic theory and financial skills, all of which contributing to their good knowledge about the development trend of Modern Bank. Due to their early involvement in financial industry, the greate achievement they have attained and the solidarity they have demonstrated, the bankers are usually recognized as an independent social class or group sharing distinct traits. First, they have strong desire to build capitalist political and economic institutions, among the others, to build a system free of governmental intervention to promote banking development. Second, they all demonstrated strong entrepreneurship. By keeping initiating and driving innovation in various fields covering financial institution, organizational structure, business operation and management, the bankers have achieved great success by building the fledging domestic bank into one of the three rival powers paralleling foreign banks and Chinese traditional banks, constituting the most significant financial power in China.Among the most striking traits featuring modern bankers, one is their insight into and devotion to the actual world, the other is the similarity of their thoughts. The first trait can be seen in the pertinence between the theories they proposed and the situation they faced. The propositions, which were inspired by the actual problems, have proved successful solutions in their application. Another important fact is that they shared the same understanding and views in many fields such as the relation between finance and economics, building of financial institutions and business development, which is due in large part to their proximity in native place, education background, political tendency, economic proposal, working experience as well as the commitment to the modernization of Chinese banking industry.In the foreword of the paper are followers: background of selection this theme, research subject and method, structure of this paper, literature review, etc.The thesis consists of six chapters.In the first section "the building of Chinese banking system and the emergence of modern bankers", the paper briefs the development of China's modern banking industry, the emergence of modern bankers and their innovative thoughts.
