Coastal areas are the main force for China to take part in international industrial competition as well as the important drive for Chinese economy to realize comprehensive, harmonious and sustainable development. After the economy gains a quick and sustained growth, the industrial development of coastal areas enters a critical period. The new run of labor distribution in the world, upgrade of domestic consumption structure and Chinese strategy of developing the west all provide opportunities for coastal areas to optimize and upgrade their industrial structure. And coastal areas also face some difficulties and challenges in the aspects including big but not strong enough foreign-driven economy, weak technological innovation abilities, unbalanced regional development and quality structure of talents failing to meet requirements of economic development.Guided by basic principles of Marxian economic theories and borrowing from proper theories of western economy, this thesis mainly studies some key links in industrial structure upgrade in coastal areas, including progression models, choosing of development strategy, developing technological innovation system, developing labor market and regional economic cooperation. The study is from the viewpoints of interior factors and exterior factors of industrial structure upgrade. By analyzing the existing problems in industrial upgrade in coastal areas and borrowing from international experience, the thesis proposes the strategy of promoting the optimizing and upgrading of industrial structure in coastal areas.This thesis believes that coastal areas should break the shackles of wild-goose model of progression, adopt strategies of competition advantages and promote the leaping model development of industry by improving technological innovation system, strengthening functions of resources allocation at labor markets and strengthening cooperation between coastal and mountainous areas.
