Based on the previous studies on addictive drug issues and by adopting such methods like participation, non-structural interview and literature analyses, this thesis probes the individual, group and social reason behind addictive drug taking behavior, and further analyzes the basic course, characteristics and existing problem of mandatory and voluntary drug recovery treatment with two in-depth case studies in Daytop village in Kunming and one compulsory rehabilitation center in a west city. Through more than 20 years'efforts, our country has made a great progress in institutionalizing and standardizing drug abuse treatment, but there still exist some problems that need to be solved urgently. These problems include: First, there is still limitation on government's management system on drug treatment; Second, working staff are generally in lack of higher professional capabilities; Third, training methods are unitary and can not help persons to give up addictive drugs effectively. Therefore, this thesis proposes to introduce the concept of community into the drug treatment organization and to construct a drug treatment community, which is characterized not only by being mandatory, educational and therapeutic, but also by such basic features as equality in a position, commonality in goal and interests, attachment of emotion, merger of resource and goal and community and personal development. The development of drug treatment community should deal with two major issues. First, we should build good material, social and cultural environments in order to serve drug recovery training; Second, we should implement effective methods and technology to cultivate the addicts'cognitive, emotional and will and then to excite their motive to give up addictive drugs, to strengthen addicts'psychological construction and their ability to keep personal integrity, and then to prevent them from various enticement and thus improve the quality and level of drug recovery and treatment. The research has come to the following basic conclusions. (1) Drug treatment community is such a community where the professionals and the addicts cooperate closely and adopt flexible management system, combining mandatory and individual participation, in order to carry out drug recovery training and improve the quality of drug treatment and maintain social order. Now that there are some weak points with institutional drug treatment, drug treatment community should be regarded as the extension as well as reform direction of professional drug treatment organization (2) The construction of drug treatment community should follow clear guidelines and principles, and put much emphasis on creating a good environment to serve for drug treatment training. (3) Professionals play a leading role in drug treatment training. So, the community should set up a flexible and practical employment mechanism and evaluation criteria to improve their professional accomplishment. (4) The community should regard strengthening addicts'cognitive, emotional, will training as the breakthrough point during the process of drug recovery training, motivate addicts to keep a sustainable and appropriate goal for giving up addictive drugs and train their psychological quality and improve their adaptability to various environments. The innovations of the research are as follows: First, to take a sociological and psychological approach to study such a social work as drug treatment; Second, to propose a academic definition of"drug treatment community", which is a basic conception; Third, to argue that drug treatment community could be regarded as the extension and expansion of professional drug treatment organization, which combines the natural advantages of community with the professional advantages of institutional drug treatment and can improve effectiveness of giving up addictive drugs and promote the sound development of drugs treatment.
