Cultural Perspective Of The Socialist Core Value System

The importance of constructing the system of socialist core values is highlighted in the resolution of the Sixth Plenary Session of the Sixteenth CPC(Communist Party of China) Central Committee, which says that "the system of socialist core values is the basis of socialist harmonious culture", and in the report to the Seventeenth National Congress of the Communist Party of China, which further points out that "the system of socialist core values represents the essence of socialist ideology".The system of core values is the soul deep down in the center of its culture. Internalized in the culture as the guiding spirit, the system of core values provides society with philosophical ideas, spiritual dynamic and proof of legitimacy. People's thoughts and ideas are undergoing significant changes as our country has stepped into the critical phase of its reform and development with the economic system and social structure changing profoundly and the interest patterns greatly adjusted. Meanwhile, economic globalization has also exerted tremendous influence on people's concept and western values has had a rather big impact on the mainstream ideology based on Marxism. Under such circumstances, how to effectively integrate culture arid value has presented us with a significant age project. The system of socialist core values is the value support of socialism with Chinese characteristics, powerful spiritual dynamics and ideological safeguard. Constructing the system of socialist core values is a major strategic task of the CPC in the new era.Following the general thinking of "raising, analyzing and solving the problem", against the background of the development of contemporary Chinese culture, this dissertation is an initial exploration of the questions "why the construction of the system of socialist core values is necessary, why it is possible and how it is possible" form the cultural perspective within the related theory of cultural studies.The dissertation consists of eight parts divided into introduction, body (six chapters) and conclusion. The introduction presents the significance of the study, the current status and patterns of related research, the basic framework, approaches and method and the innovative points of the study. The first chapter defines the related concepts of the system of socialist core values, analyzes the fundamental features and major problems of the development of contemporary Chinese culture and summarizes the basic cultural functions of the system of socialist core values. Chapter Two interprets the basic content of the system of socialist core values and further probes into its internal structure and summarizes its basic characters. Chapter Three reviews the changes of the system of Chinese core values in the period of Modern China, and draws the conclusion that the system of socialist core values is the inevitable result of the cultural changes since the beginning of Modern China (dating back to Opium War). It further analyzes the cultural resources of the construction of the system of socialist core values. Chapter Four demonstrates the necessity, possibility and realistic basis of the construction of the system of socialist core values, probes into the issue of 'unitary'or 'pluralism' concerning the construction of the system of socialist core values and refutes the opinions that "Marxism is outdated" or "socialism has failed", which may influence the construction of the system of socialist core values. Chapter Five probes into the respective realization mechanism of Chinese and western systems of core values and makes a comparison. It also analyzes the difficult situation in the realization mechanism of the traditional systems of socialist core values and hence points out the inevitability and direction of the transformation of the mechanism. Furthermore, this chapter explores the cultural mechanism in realizing the system of socialist core values. Chapter Six elaborates the specific cultural means of building up the system of socialist core values: strengthening the construction of leading culture, making the system of socialist core values more attractive and cohesive, integrating the system of socialist core values into campus cultural construction, using the system to guide the mass culture and social thoughts, building up socialist harmonious culture and promoting the realization of the system of socialist core values.
