Nationalism, an angel and a devil, is a strange mixture which is becoming more active after the cold war, like a thick blood boiling in people's spiritual world, consciously or unconsciously influencing and changing the world.Contemporary Chinese nationalism, the continuation and development of Chinese nationalism in the present, is the coupling of Chinese nationalism and present situation. It is not only a kind of contemporary Chinese modem state of mind, idea and ideology, but also a social practice and movement. As a double-edged sword playing the dual role of positive and negative, it has greatly influenced China itself and relationships between China and other countries in the world. Comprehensive and theoretical discussions on contemporary Chinese nationalism may help us not only to understand its essence, but also to guide and construct it to work in a rational way.Under the guidance of the dialectical materialism and historical materialism, based on existing study on nationalism at home and abroad, the paper will systematically analyze domestic and overseas historic resources of contemporary Chinese nationalism, and try to establish a solid contemporary research platform. After summarizing and studying reasons, types, characteristics and functions of the rise of contemporary Chinese nationalism, the paper will also concentrate on analyzing performances of current three types of nationalism in china, probe into problems of contemporary Chinese nationalism, and finally put forward solutions to deal with them. The whole paper includes three parts: introduction, main body (7 chapters) and conclusion. After reviewing and analyzing such theoretical issues as the meaning of nationalism, its historical development, types and functions and so on, the first chapter will present two main lines of grasping the meaning of nationalism, and then put forward standards of defining several types of nationalism. Overviewing theories of modern nationalism, the second chapter will sum up and explore performances of contemporary Chinese nationalism, reasons of its rise, its implications, characteristics, types and functions from the reality of modern China, especially focusing on reasons of its rise and characteristics. The third chapter will discuss present performances and influences of state nationalism, a type of contemporary Chinese nationalism, especially its influences on relationships of Sino-US and Sino-Japanese from the angle of its main active field, that is, foreign communication field. National separatism, another kind of contemporary Chinese nationalism, will be introduced and analyzed in the fourth chapter. At first, theories about national separatism will be set forth and evaluated, and then this part will elaborate East Turkestan Independence Movement, including its historic trajectory, ideological root, essence, harm and characteristics. What's more, the chapter will expound Tibet Independent Movement in detail, including its historic evaluation, current situation and future trend. The fifth chapter, divided into two sections, will theoretically study Han Nationalism, another main type of contemporary Chinese nationalism. The first section will analyze its implications and reasons of rise, and the second section will put forward principles of how to treat and evaluate it on the basis of detailed analysis of its main appeals.Major problems of contemporary Chinese nationalism will be analyzed in sixth chapter. According to what has been discussed in the first six chapters, the seventh chapter will pay attention to solutions about how to comprehensively handle those problems by means of media, education, identity, value system, economy, institution, awareness, leaders and legislation, etc. Prospects of contemporary Chinese nationalism will be proposed in the part of conclusion on the basis of summary of the whole paper.
