Working as the second language of geography, map is the simplification and replacement of all words, text and thinking in geography. It is an important feature and a unique style of geography teaching that maps are often used in geography teaching, it is also a special teaching method. Whether the teacher can provide or design a good teaching map or not often becomes the key of a good geography class. With the development of cognitive theories and instructional theories, continuous reform of national geography curriculum, especially the rapid development of information technology, people have a new understanding and new requirements of maps on geography teaching. In such a new situation, how maps on teaching go on and how they work in geography teaching are worth studying for geography teachers and researchers. This thesis focus on the design of electronic teaching maps in geography education. The design principles and design strategies of electronic teaching maps are discussed in the thesis.â… hope it can be helpful to those professional designers of teaching maps and geography teachers.Firstly, the thesis analyzes the application status of teaching maps in geography on the base of the current status at home and aboard. It also analyzes some electronic teaching maps in some coursewares and summarizes some problems of teaching maps: how to select information in a map, how to put multimedia elements into a map, how to choose and process the base map, questions about visual communication design and the size of map and so on..The electronic teaching map, mainly used in geography teaching in high school, has its special design requirements because of the influence of its output device, its reading environment and the students cognitive law. Chapter Three puts the emphasis on the design of the basic elements of electronic teaching maps, including variable of map symbols, colour of map symbols and the design of map notes. It puts forward six design principles of map symbols and its processing method, such as simple graphics, clear outline and four design principles of map notes. In accordance with different teaching function, electronic teaching maps are divided into three types:transmission electronic teaching map, analytic electronic teaching map and exploratory electronic teaching map. In the fourth chapter, it puts forward five design principles of transmission electronic teaching map on the base of the analysis of its learning factors. They are multimedia principle, interactive principle, space-close principle, related principle, individual difference principle. It also puts forward six methods of reducing the cognitive load of transmission electronic teaching map, such as:compared to transmission electronic teaching map, the most obvious feature of analytic electronic teaching map is interactive learning process and dynamic of map images. The fifth chapter is mainly about map spatial cognition and map theory. It also puts forward five design strategies of analytic electronic teaching map.The sixth chapter has a further study about the design of exploratory electronic teaching map. It provides a model of exploratory electronic teaching map after analyzing the cognitive model of information.Transmission of exploratory electronic teaching map. In actual, exploratory electronic teaching map, as a cognitive tool of learning geography, has surpassed the connotation and extension of traditional geography teaching map and become a support environment of geographical research study. In the new social and historical background, great changes have taken place in connotation and extension of geography teaching map. Electronic teaching map is bound to be become an indispensable part.
