A society's vitality depends upon the free play of each individual's vitality in this society. In order to bring out each individual's activity and creativity, there must need be more and more conscious individual emancipation within the growing socialism with Chinese characteristics. This dissertation approaches the issue through multiple disciplines on the line of basic Marxist principles. First, the author examines the four stages in the history of the development of individuality, summarizes three theories on individual emancipation in intellectual history: bourgeois theory on individual emancipation, Marx theory on individual emancipation and the democratic and socialist theory on individual emancipation with Chinese characteristics.The author points out the individual tasks of individual emancipation in the fields of thinking, economy, politics, science and technology, and education in present-day China, and attempts at the practical ways of realizing individual emancipation. In the author's view, intellectual liberation includes two aspects: internal and external, its essence being human liberation. Intellectual liberation demands the guidance of practice and seeking truths from facts. the exercise of dialectical thinking, of independent, innovative, and open thinking. The scientific qualities of individuals are to be cultivated in practice. The socialist market economy of China, the author holds, demands and enables individual emancipation on the one hand, but it produces double-edged effects as well. Individual emancipation should be promoted for healthy economic development, and reforms revolved on individual emancipation offer a key to solving the present economic problems. Individual liberty is a precondition for democracy, democracy guarantees individual liberty institutionally. It is the author's belief that our democratic mechanism be constructed on individual emancipation. The author also discusses the contradictory unity between Party character and individuality, and analyzes the current democratic centralism from the perspective of individual emancipation. According to the author, science and technology produces increasing double- edged effects on human development, and its advancement must be guided by individual emancipation. The evils of our present educational system are manifested more and more: At last, the author point out that we need an education revolution centered around individual emancipation.
