We often hear the children ask:: "What is this? " After we answer what that is, the following question comes: "why? " Faced such a question, many adults will feel embarrassed . Probably, we can partly resolve the problem with the help of the history textbooks or large reference books, but in current publication , the researches on how to assign name to things are few and far between .The way we ask is similar to the children. We want to know: Why is the educational organization called school, the educator called teacher and the learner called student? Certainly, our question is more difficult than the children's: Not only do we want to know the origin of these abstract education concept name such as education, teaching, but also pay close attention to the development of these concepts themselves, we assume that the concept attribute accords with its name in the history long-term. The attribute is always changing and relatively the name is stable. However, if the attribute takes place qualitative change, a new name will replace the former .The change of the name is tantamount to of the word that expresses concept. The form of word change may be that a new word replaces the old, or the old word gets new meaning. Based on the relation between concept attribute and name, we try to research the concept development through observing the change of concept name.Because in the modern times, Chinese education concepts have taken place more change than ever, we choose the transition from tradition to modern as our focal point. The research indicate: in spite of great affection from the western, Chinese modern education concepts stem directly from traditional education concepts. We follow the historical materialism to regard the practice movement as the basic of the ideal movement. On the other hand, we do our best to avoid reducing history fact from history theory. We hope the decisive role of the education practice and education system will be displayed naturally after we have discussed carefully how the five basic education concepts developed in the history.
