Research On The Development Model Of China's Private Higher Education

Higher education in China is experiencing its historical stage. It is undertaking a series of systematic reforms in areas such as investment, establishment, and management, especially with increasing higher education expansion and gradually established socialism market system. Private higher education, as a result from higher education reform, has become an indispensable part of the development of Chinese higher education. The existence of over 1000 private higher education institutions has demonstrates the strong life-force of private higher education and reflected the trends of the diverse development of private higher education.This article theoretically analyzes and empirically describes the current development mode of private higher education in China with reviewing its macro background. According to the differences in institutional financing and running, this article classifies the establishment and development of private colleges anduniversities in China into six models: Founded by tuition, Founded by enterprise, State-round colleges privatization, Affiliating private colleges, Operation by educational shave system, Educational chain.It analyzes the establishment social background, main characteristics, existence rationale, encountering development problems, and future development of the six models. It describes their distinctive differences in mission, curricula, pedagogy, administration, financing, as well as development. Even though different modes have different strengths and limits, they all indicate their ability to effectively accommodate to and utilize market mechanism to promote the diverse development of private higher education.
