Yale-in-China was an organization which was initiated and driven by some alumni of Yale University. Its original intention was to evangelize through founding educational and medical enterprise. But later, it aimed at the educational enterprise, not emphasizing the aim of evangelizing. After it came into China, Yale-in-China founded the College of Yale-in-China, the Yali Union Middle School, the Hsiang-ya Medical College and the School of Nurse in Changsha firstly, and later they participated in establishing and managing Hua Chung University after the College of Yale-in-China closed. The educational enterprise of Yale-in-China lasted for about half a century, and it became an important component of Christian Education in China, and brought indelible positive impact.For some reasons, the study of the educational enterprise of Yale-in-China is deficient in China while some studies were carried out by western scholars. Nevertheless, there are still some more researches work need to be done. The dissertation selects the main education institution(Yali and Hsiang-ya) as the object, and the period is from the founding of Yali Academy(1906) to the retreating of Yale-in-China from the mainland(1951). It mainly studies the professionalization of the educational enterprise of Yale-in-China and some correlative problems. It is hoped that the dissertation would deepen our understanding of Chinese Christian education and provide some useful implications.This dissertation investigated the background, the founding and early work of Yale-in-China at first, so that to reveal explicitly the intention and character of the educational enterprise of Yale-in-China. Yale-in-China was born in Yale University in America, and the background of its founding consisted of mainly three factors, they were Christian tradition of Yale University, the Student Volunteer Movement for Foreign Missions and Pitkin's martyrdom in 1900. Although it changed into a secular organization later, it had used to be a mission before it changed.Like other Christian schools, the educational enterprise of Yale-in-China also experienced the history of indigenization, secularization and professionalization. Indigenization means that the indigenous color builds up gradually and foreign color weakens gradually. Secularization means that the Christian color weakens gradually and non-Christian color builds up gradually. Professionalization means that the Christian schools improve its academic level continuously, and applied itself to professional development. The dissertation investigates carefully the course of indigenization and secularization, and analyzes their influences upon the professionalization, and also analyzes the connection between them. They affected and drove each other, and were interdetermined. At the same time, they each showed some distinctive backgrounds and characteristics.
