With the fast development of the information technology, the digital games have been one of the important parts of living; people are interested in playing digital games, especially the young. However, the negative influences of the digital games have also been a social problem. With the expansion of education reform, the following problem has been one of the current research focuses, that is, how to use digital game as a tool to study, to embody the educative effects of the games, to combine games and learning together, to sparkplug the green games and quality education, to implement the human-oriented education.In this paper, based on the existed research results, using the literature research method and the systems analysis method, from the angel of self-directed learning, using the learning theory and the research & development theory of digital game to study the problem of digital instructional games which can support self-directed learning.At first, the conceptions, characters and learning modes of self-directed learning were introduced to particularly expound the self-directed learning mode.Secondly, the essences, characters and types of digital games, the learning mechanism and conditions during playing digital games were analyzed, and the learning factors and learning mode in digital games were also analyzed. The connotation and characters of the learning which based on the digital games were analyzed, discussed the relationship between digital games and independence learning, and brought out the principles, strategies, learning processes and modes of digital game-based self-directed learning.Based on the above analysis, the basic connotations of digital instructional games which support self-directed learning were analyzed, brought forward the structure model and function model of digital instructional games which support self-directed learning, and raised the basic principles and design methods of instructional games. The realization of self-directed learning strategies in designing games, the strategies of combining learning contents with games, and the strategies of game designing were concerned in this paper. The function modules of digital instructional games which support self-directed learning were studied.According to the raised instructional game model, the process of developing an instructional game for math class of grade two in primary school were gone into particulars. According to the investigation of practical application of that game, the learning effects and the problems in real applications were analyzed, some research experiences for the following game designing and developing were provided.The conclusions of this research were drawn and the projects for the next step research were given in the last section.
