A Study On Contemporary Music-oriented Extra-curricular Activities In Primary School

With the full swing of the basic education curriculum reform in primary and secondary schools in China since 2001, education ideas and concepts in schools have undergone enormous changes. To promote physical and mental health of students, creative spirit and practical ability and to meet the needs of students'life-long development have become basic goals and tasks in contemporary elementary education. As an important part of aesthetic education, music education has an irreplaceable role compared with other disciplines in the training of the child's emotions and the formation of aesthetic values; therefore the curriculum reform has received unprecedented attention.In addition to music curricula, other forms of music education are also constantly emerging and endless on campus. The paper defines all of these various forms of school music as "extra-curricular activities of music", and around the theme of this article: Extra-curricular activities of music should be parallel to music, practice-oriented music activities and full participation in the activities. The paper discusses the definition of the concept of extra-curricular activities of music and explains a systematic exposition to the theoretical basis. Based on the sample survey of ten primary schools in Changchun city, the paper analyzes the values, objectives, content, teaching methods and organizational forms of music programs, student evaluation, and specific strategic issues of school-based management. At the end, the paper tries to propose the ideal design about the future extra-curricular activities involving music in China. This is shown through case studies of two primary schools in Changchun which have distinguishing features in the practice of music-centred extra-curricular activities.The main framework of the paper includes six chapters:introduction; theoretical basis of extra-curricular activities of music in contemporary primary schools; the value and the target location of extra-curricular activities of music in primary schools; the exploration of the content, organizational forms and teaching methods of extra-curricular activities of music in primary schools; the study of student evaluation and school-based management of extra-curricular activities of music in primary schools; the case studies of the present situation and the ideal design of extra-curricular activities of music in primary schools. The paper can be divided into four parts:Partâ… :the introduction of Chapter 1 mainly explores the concept of extra-curricular activities of music, the historical development of musical activities. Based on the analysis of research concerning extra-curricular activities of music, the paper puts forward the specific research methods and value of music in China's education system. Partâ…¡:Chapterâ…¡satisfies the theoretical research component of the paper. The author discusses the theoretical basis of implementing strategies relevant to music-centred extra-curricular activities. The paper draws on theories contributed by Marxist ideology, implements developmental psychology as a scientific basis, incorporates Dewey's influence on current music curriculum, and the new philosophy of modern music education, as theoretical basis points. With these ideologies as the core theories of significance studying, the paper elaborates the guidance and inspiration of these theories to extra-curricular activities of music, and makes a theoretical base for the full text.Partâ…¢:From Chapter 3 to Chapter 5, based on the sample survey of ten primary schools in Changchun city, the paper analyzes the values, objectives, content, teaching methods and organizational forms of music programs, student evaluation, and specific strategic issues of school-based management. These components are fundamental to the paper's thesis.In the third chapter, based on the discus of values and goals of extra-curricular activities of music, the paper analyzed the special value of extra-curricular activities of music in the school music education as an "activity", and undstanded the symbiotic relationship between extra-curricular activities of music and music curriculum, and then, the author put forward her views and opinions about the designing orientation and targeting of extra-curricular activities of music of primary school.Based on investigation and analysis, Chapter IV and Chapter V studied specific implementation strategies about the curriculum content, organization, teaching methods, student assessment and course management issues of extra-curricular activities of music of primary school. In these two chapters, the paper initiated the expansion of multiple extra-curricular activities of music, making the development of curriculum resource as a means; constructed the organization of extra-curricular activities of music, based on interaction and fusion of class, school, and social; designed the teaching methods of extra-curricular activities of music, making situation, guide, design as main line; pay close attention and emphasis on the moving student evaluation methods of extra-curricular activities of music; and studied the problems of school-based management related to extra-curricular activities of music.Partâ…£:In the last chapter, based on the case studies of two primary schools in Changchun which have distinguishing features in the practice of music curriculum, the paper tries to plan, outline and propose the ideal design of the future of music-oriented extra-curricular activities.
