Since 21`s century, with the deeper economic cooperation among countries and regions in the world, and the more international trade exchanges, economic competition and industry competition were no longer just within countries and regions, but became into intensive international competition. The constant strengthening of the international competitiveness can not only improve the status of a country and/or region in the world economy, but also improve their economic benefits and national welfares. Automotive industry, as one of the leading industries in many countries and/or regions, was called the "industry among industries". The strengthening of the international competitiveness of the automotive industry, was not only represent the level of industrial development, but also on behalf of the level of national and economic development. Investigations on international competitiveness of the automotive industry became a research topic with great importance.By introducing the related international industrial competitiveness theories and evaluation methods, the status of the automobile industries of the world and major countries were discussed. From two perspectives, the macro-factors, the industry factors, and the enterprise factors, also the total factors, the quality factors, and the development factors were analyzed. On such basis, the evaluation system of the international competitiveness of the automobile industry was established. Through the overall evaluation and the efficiency evaluation of the international competitiveness of the automotive industry among China, Germany, France and Japan during 2001-2007 years, this paper attempted to find the gap and the progressive trend of the international competitiveness of the automotive industry between China and other developed countries. In addition, the overall evaluation scores as the first level, the scores of the macro-factors, the industry factors, and the enterprise factors, and also the total factors, the quality factors, and the development factors as the second level, the related competitiveness indicators as the third level, the contribution of such factors to the international competitiveness of the automotive industry during 2001-2007 years by using multiple regression and panel analysis were explored. Thus, the key factors were identified. Finally, some relevant strategies and suggestions were given for the future development of the international competitiveness of Chinese automobile industry.The innovative achievements of this paper were summarized as follows:(1) by three levels, the macro-level, industry level, and enterprise level, the concept of the international competitiveness of the automobile industry was completely given;(2) by two different perspectives, the macro-factors, the industry factors, and the enterprise factors, and also the total factors, the quality factors, the development factors, the evaluation system of the international competitiveness of the automotive industry were constructed;(3) by two different evaluation methods, the overall evaluation and the efficiency evaluation, the status and development trends of the international competitiveness of the automobile industry of different countries in different years were comprehensively analyzed;(4) by means of two different aspects, causal analysis and trend analysis, the difference of the contributions of the competitieveness factors attributed to the international competitiveness of the automobile industry were given and compared;(5) through the comparisons of the evaluation results in different years and by different countries, the status of the international competitiveness of Chinese automobile industry was measured from a global view, and then some specific strategies and suggestions were put forward.
