The topic of sustainable growth is a major concern of large-scale global enterprises, as well as a big challenge faced by domestic enterprises at the present and in the future. Based on theoretical exploration and positive analysis, this paper pursues a systematic investigation of enterprise sustainable growth from the vantage point of operating strategies, using manufacturing enterprises as the research focus.Starting by reviewing the literature and introducing the current situation and the trends of domestic and overseas research, this paper gives an overview of the basic problem of enterprise versus environment, in an attempt to provide an overall picture of the external environment in which enterprises operate and grow, and then examines the relationship between enterprise and environment. The paper uses the two-branch evolution model to describe, and to conduct a positive analysis of, the local configuration of enterprise development, and formulates the modification model and other four forms of the typical enterprise life-cycle, with a view to capturing the manifestation of the enterprise life process in a more comprehensive and more precise manner.Core competence is the source of enterprises' long-term competitive advantage. The paper incorporates this frontier theory originating from the Western academy, sums up four basic characteristics of core competence, and proposes three principles governing core competence management. In addition, the paper makes a theoretical study of and a positive analysis of the ways to foster and enhance core competence within the context of Chinese enterprises. The sustainable growth of enterprises must be guided by the overall strategy to find a development space and path. The author analyzes the issues concerning the choice of the specialization strategy and the diversification strategy, makes an induction about the path of enterprise development, and makes a positive analysis of the growth of Vinda Paper Inc. and Haier Corporation. The author also brings forward the basic analysis frame--the "3+1" model concerning the choice of diversification strategy and identifies four critical problems that exist in the execution of the strategy.Strategic shift is a significant adjustment of the operating focus that enterprises develop at a certain point in time in the course of development. This paper gives a definition of strategic shift, investigates its motivation, and presents a set of quantitative measurement criteria and a theoretical frame for the decision-making process of strategic shift, thereby enhancing the theory of enterprise strategic shift in a relatively systematic fashion.Learning organization is the latest theoretical construct. This paper examines the inherent relationship between knowledge and core competence, and demonstrates that knowledge is the source of core competence. By expounding and evaluating the arguments that prevail among Western academicians about learning organization, this paper analyses the three major differences that exist...
