Retail internationalization has been the focus of much academic and practitioner development in recent times. With the development of international trade liberalization and global economy integration, internationalization has increasingly becoming the most significant approach to gain effective economy of scale and fulfill the higher development for retailers in the future. However, the research in retail internationalization is still in growing phase, many theories are not perfect and many viewpoints at the same problem have differences. In China, very few scholars do such kind of research on retail internationalization.The author firstly makes a clear terminology on retail internationalization and relevant terms by clarifying the definition and characteristic of retail internationalization, discussing the classification of international retailers. Moreover, comments on the evolution of academic research on retail internationalization. Then the author expatiates the motives, modes and behavior of retail internationalization in detail according to the clues of retail internationalization process. The main parts could be summarized as followings: Motives of retail internationalization, Overseas market selection, Market entry methods and relevant strategies, International transfer of retail know-how and retail adaptation, Impacts of retail internationalization and the responses from host country.Research on motives of retail internationalization is an indispensable part to the dissertation. The author reviews the literature on this field overall. Researchers in Europe and US divided the motives of retail internationalization into two kinds: proactive and reactive expansion, which paid much attention to pull factors and push factors respectively. Both pull factors and push factors played the important role in practice of retail internationalization.
