With advanced technology, diversified market demand and shortened product life cycle, companies face the challenges of speeduping product research and development, shortening the time-to-market, enhancing product quality and reducing cost. Since design and manufacturing processes are the most important phases of product quality and cost management, product competition ability lies on the effective management of design and manufacturing phases. Traditionally, quality and cost management activities are limited in the boundary of enterprise, and most of their attention is paid to processes and departments in company-wide, instead of supply-chain-wide. The quality and cost datas and information are regarded as core business secrets, which cannot be shared with their partners, thus obstructs cutting in total cost of product through the cooperation and coordination between companies. With the economics globalization, technology complexity increasing and enterprise specialization, the value chain of manufacturing industry in the world are broken up, so that technology becomes a self-existent commodity. The whole production process including development, design and manufacturing, which were originally carried through in one company, are broken up into multiple companies. Therefore, quality and cost management of design and manufacturing are not problems of company-wide anymore. They should be investigated in the supply-chain-wide. Only considering resource optimization within company is not enough for competition. Enterprise must make the best of resource within the supply chain and coorperate with their partners, thereby might enhance product quality and reduce cost. The present thesis aims to study how to improve quality and cost management through coordination of design and manufacturing activities, which will be valuable for both theoretical research and practical application. After the literature review of interface management, quality and cost management of supply chain and design chain, in the second chapter, the concept and model of Design-Manufacturing Chain (D-MC) based on concurrence engineering arepresented, in which manufacturer early involement is emphasized. It may improve the feasibility of design and decrease design change, thus is helpful in reducing product cost and enhancing quality. The third chapter analyzes the characteristic and circumstance of D-MC interface and the three types of interface relationship, and puts forward that manufacturer had better involve design process in different phases and with different degrees according to their types of innovation (improvement, imitation and completely innovation), then constructs the function which influences the effect of interface management. The fourth chapter brings forward the definition of Design-Manufacturing Chain, sets forth the relationship among design quality, manufacturing quality and product quality with leverage and analyzes application of quality management tools in the phases of D-MC, then constructs the model of Design-Manufacturing Chain Quaity is constructed. The fifth chapter analyzes characteristics of the methods of supply chain cost management, and sets up the application framework of cost management methods in D-MC, then presents the concept of Design For Value (DFV) which integrates Design For Cost (DFC), Design For Manufacturing (DFM) and Design For Assembly (DFA). Afterward, a case explains that design improvement is a "gold mine" of product cost reduction. The sixth chapter establishes and analyzes the evaluation indicator system for cooperation partners in D-MC, and evaluates partners with integrated fuzzy evaluation method, then caculates the net benefit of improvement of D-MC management through cost-benefit indicator system with quantitative and qualitative analysis. The seventh chapter briefly introduces the project survey, and finally, the eighth chapter prospects the further studies in the future.
