Information Systems are necessary for modern enterprises to develop and expand. Faced with the increasingly changeable market competition, enterprises have to keep innovating, and information system innovative usage is an important part of enterprise innovation. The variable of information system usage play a central role in the place of information systems research, however, from literature review, there has been little progression in the variable of information system usage as a theoretical construct, which has drew researchers' great attention. Practically, how to innovatively use information systems to help build and sustain competitive advantage is a key issue for existing enterprises.Based on the above background, this dissertation examines prior domestic and foreign studies in detail from three aspects: information system usage construct, information systems usage, information systems innovation, and it analyzes some existing research limitation. Then the dissertation states organizational theories of exploitative innovation & explorative innovation, and from the theoretical deduction it proposes that two patterns of information system innovative usage, namely information system exploitative usage and information system explorative usage, should have positive impact on the business long-term and short-term performance. At the same time, the dissertation discusses the theory of organization innovation climate to analyze the mechanism about two patterns of information system innovative usage. These theories are theoretical framework the original model.Based on the above theoretical analysis, the dissertation takes exploratory cross-case study methodology, and chooses six enterprises from different industries. Through in-depth interview with IT managers & CIO from these enterprises, the dissertation describes some examples and illustrates their relationships among complex information systems innovative usage, organization innovation climate and business performance. Additionally it summarizes the results from every case. Therefore, the original model is more accurate by the case study. Combined theoretical deduction and cross-case studies, this dissertation builds a conceptual model based on the innovation perspective and suggests five basic research hypotheses and eight research sub-hypotheses.To test the conceptual model and proposed research hypotheses, this paper takes enterprises in China as survey data objects, and finally 192 valid questionnaires are collected. In the data processing procedure, SPSS (statistical package for the social sciences) and LISREL are employed to verify suggested model and hypotheses with data descriptive analysis, reliability analysis and validity analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and structural equation modeling analysis. Empirical research support the conceptual model and most of hypotheses. Finally it gives some discussions about the results.Though theoretical exploration, in-depth interviews and quantitative analysis, some important results and conclusions are as follows:(1) Complex information system exploitative usage & explorative usage are important steps from IT investment to business performance. Complex information system exploitative usage has a positive effect on enterprise short-term performance, and complex information system explorative usage has a positive effect on enterprise long-term performance.(2) Organizational innovation climate is the deterministic factor that can directly, positively effect on complex information system exploitative usage & explorative usage.(3) Organizational innovation climate have indirect, positive effects on enterprise short-term performance through complex information system exploitative usage, and organizational innovation climate have indirect, positive effects on enterprise long-term performance through complex information system explorative usage. Organizational innovation climate has not direct effect on enterprise performance, and in this process complex information system exploitative usage & explorative usage are mediator variables(4) Both variable of IT team support and IT professional skill have positive effects on complex information system exploitative usage & explorative usage, at the same time, the variable of IT resources supply has a positive effect on complex information system exploitative usage, and the variable of IT learning in progress has a positive effect on complex information system explorative usage.(5) Among four component factors of organizational innovation climate, the impact of IT professional skill on both complex information system exploitative usage and explorative usage are the most apparent.Compared with previous researches, the innovations of this research are mainly manifested in the following aspects: (1) This dissertation builds the conceptual model of the relationships among organizational innovation climate, complex information system innovative usage and business performance. The reliability and validity of this model are empirically tested from questionnaires.(2) This dissertation proposes two patterns of information system innovative usage and defines the conceptual meanings, and author develops the constructs items of enterprise complex information system exploitative & explorative usage according to the enterprise information system practices.(3) This dissertation, for the first time, empirically confirms the direct relationships between complex information system exploitative usage and enterprise short-term performance, between complex information system explorative usage and. enterprise long-term performance. It provides new evidence about the mechanism how to get performance from IT investment.(4) This dissertation confirms four component factors of enterprise innovation climate, and for the first time, empirically tests the influence relationships between innovation climate & its four component factors and information system usage. This study expands the research that organizational innovation climate impacts on the special innovation behavior.
