With the rapid development of economy and acceleration of urbanization process in China, problems and conflicts of urban land using are becoming increasingly prominent, mainly including unreasonable urban land using structure, low intensity of land utilization, continuously deteriorating quality of urban environment and so on. Assessment of intensive use of urban land play an important role on promoting the rational use of urban land, improving the efficiency of urban land use, improving people's living environment and realizing sustainable development of land resources. In recent years, the rapid development and application of Remote Sensing (RS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and computer technology offers new methods and technical means to achieve intensive use of urban land. Based on the urban land-use status data of Gaoxin District in Tangshan City and the theory and method of intensive use of urban land, this paper achieved the following results by means of RS, GIS, Internet and computer and other technologies:(1) Established a comprehensive assessment index system and selected a comprehensive assessment model for the study area; (2)Established a thematic spatial database of land use based on GeoDatabase model; (3)Designed and developed an Urban Land Assessment Information System (ULAIS) of compound framework(hybrid structure) of B/S and C/S by using of".NET"language and GIS component technology, which achieved the informatization and scientization of the management and intensive assessment of urban land; (4)Completed the assessment of present situation and intensive use of urban land in Gaoxin District of Tangshan City by using the developed ULAIS system. Through the assessment and analysis, some conclusions can be drawn as follows: firstly, the distribution of construction land of the study area is reasonable, which is proved by large proportion of agricultural land, small proportion of business and services land, high proportion of industry and mining land; secondly, land use intensity is low; the building density of whole area's construction land is 0.31, the land area of building density which is less than 0.15 accounts for 31.8% of the total land area; building plot ratio is 0.61, the land area of building plot ratio which is less than 0.5 accounts for 60.3% of the total land area; thirdly, intensive use of land is low, the proportion of low and moderate use of construction land is 38.8% and overuse accounts for 6.4% and there is a lot of potential developing space. This study not only offers the theoretical basis and technical means to assessment of land intensive use of Gaoxin District in Tangshan City, its established index system and assessment system also has great practical value for the assessment study of land intensive use to other cities .
