Research On The Children’s Costume Of Ancient China

This PhD thesis takes the ancient children’s costume as the object of study, starting from the collected all kinds of ancient children’s image data, combined with the corresponding literature data and real, and draws lessons from the research method of related theories and disciplines, to China ancient children’s costume of a more comprehensive, systematic analysis and discussion. This PhD thesis consists of introduction, the first part, the second part and conclusion.The introduction part, explaining to the main reason and meaning of the selected topic, related research status and research methods, research content and the reliability analysis of the research object, and point out the innovation and deficiencies.In this PhD thesis, the first part is an overview of context of China ancient children’s costumes overall development. This thesis was divided into four parts-which were ①the Tang Dynasty, ②the Song Dynasty, ③the dynasties of Liao, Xia, Jurchen Jin and Yuan, and ④the dynasties of Ming and Qing-according to different characteristics of the children’s costume in various historical times. Starting from the social background, concepts of marriage and family customs of this period, also selected representative and reliable children images, combined with literature, the textual research of children’s costumes and the characteristics of each period. Through carding the development process of the Chinese ancient children’s costumes, as can be seen, along with the change of dynasty and times change, children’s clothing will be more or less affected by these factors and with the characteristics of the times. And, children’s costumes produced change, are generally in the emphasis on practicality foundation, and have the destination choice, such as the simple and practical jumpsuit in the Tang Dynasty, which was designed to satisfy children’s physiological needs; or the open-front short jacket in the Song Dynasty, which was not only comfortable but also easy to dress; or the bellyband with different kinds of propitious patterns in the Qing Dynasty, which carried the adults" best wishes for their children.In this PhD thesis, the second part, mainly expounds the characteristics of China ancient children’s costumes with, is divided into three chapters to analyze and discuss, namely the style features of children’s costumes, the cultural characteristics of children’s costumes, and artistic characteristics of children’s costumes. This part, firstly a detailed description of in view of the Chinese ancient children’s costumes, children’s shoes, children’s trousers, bonnet and other representative of the children’s clothing, analyzes its types and characteristics; then to be discussed of the unique modeling design, fine beautiful embroidery pattern, and proportionally color collocation from the angle of art and design, so as to reveal the artistic characteristics of Chinese ancient children’s costumes unique charm; finally elaborates the ancient children’s costumes in the shape, decoration, color contains the auspicious meaning.Research shows that, China ancient children’s costumes with the development rules and the characteristics of different and adult costumes. The children’s costumes of ancient China had its very own law of development and characteristic, which were quite different from those of the adult costume. On account of the differences of physiological characteristic, living environment and social status between children and adults, ancient Chinese children’s costume was influenced much more by children’s physical characteristic, living environment and cultural custom than its reference to the adult costume. Consequently, the evolving rule of children’s costume was also different from that of the adult costume, which had developed on its own over centuries. In light of the study on the developing process of ancient Chinese children’s costume, it was clearly showed that, as the time went on, the children’s costume was influenced more or less by multiple elements and developed specific characteristic of era in different time periods. Usually, most of ancient Chinese children’s costume’s styles were rooted in those of the adult costume. However, in order to be easy to dress and allow free movement for the children, designer also needed to modify the children’s costume’s clothing style according to their physical characteristic, which was for ease of walking and running of children. Nevertheless, in some formal occasions, the level of the children’s costume’s adultification would be much higher. On the whole, restricted by age, children’s clothing has its unique style, with practical and aesthetic; in the costumes decoration, showing the characteristics of broad themes and craft and diverse, with distinctive artistic characteristics; in the development of China costume culture, ancient children’s clothing gradually formed the cultural characteristics of regional features and folk custom and the religious content, at the same time, the people through the children’s clothing to convey the concept of the traditional culture and the care of children and have good wishes, thus forming a unique Chinese ancient children’s clothing content.
