Cable-supported structure is a novel structure developed from cable-stayed structure. Cable-supported structure gives full play to the advantages of cable-stayed structure and overcomes its shortcomings, applicable for structures with large span and space. Due to the“lifting force”produced by the continuous cable on the roof structure, the efficiency of the cable is greatly promoted and the column height is reduced, therefore, resulting in less material usage and lower engineering budget. The cable-supported structure is capable of larger span than the cable-stayed and easier to be constructed. Through a study on this type of new structure, its mechanism, design guidelines and characteristics in construction are revealed in depth, and the theory is validated by engineering practice; in the meanwhile, valuable experiences are gathered for the development and application of this structure.Firstly, a developing history of cable structure and problems to be solved are summarized in this dissertation, based on which the birth of cable-supported structure is introduced. In the meanwhile, the characteristics, mechanism and prospect of cable-supported structure are pointed out.Secondly, non-linear finite element theory is introduced and comparisons are made between geometric non-linear theories based on whole quantity and increment and solving methods of non-linear simultaneous equations are summarized. Based on calculation theory of cable-supported structure and catenary theory, catenary cable element suitable for cable-supported analysis is derived, a modified solving method for non-linear simultaneous equations—modified Newton-Raphson iteration method is proposed and non-linear finite element analysis program for cable-supported structure is prepared. The flow chart, convergence criterion and programming technology are introduced and the accuracy of the program is verified by classic examples.Thirdly, the program is used to analyze and compare cable-supported and cable-stayed structures. The deformation and internal forces are studied under full and half-span uniformly distributed loads and the superiority of the cable-supported is proven. Multi-parametric analysis is carried out on cable-supported structure, considering location of support, node interval and pre-stress, etc. and a few conclusions are drawn and suggestions are given on the design of cable-supported structure. Finally, the author participated in the whole design-construction process of a hockey gymnasium. In this engineering practice, project summary, internal force analysis, member design, node design, economic analysis, simulation analysis on construction scheme and whole-process construction and construction control and monitoring are elaborated. The success of this project verifies the theoretical analysis of cable-supported structure and provides valuable experiences for future promotion.
