Describe The City Spirit

Urban color is a new field within and out of China. There is little research and has no systemic theory in this field. But, there are a lot of needs of urban color planning in China. In order to resolve the problems in practice, I try to answer some basic theoretic problems through the deep research of urban color. The general results of my research is urban color is an important means of expressing the spirit of the city.Firstly, my paper gives a new definition of urban color which is the generalized color in the exterior space of the city, including concrete matter and virtual mind. It’s the all and the one of the seeing. My paper developed the basic theory of the three factors of the color and its relations in chromatology, and advanced the three factors and five relations of the urban color. My paper put forward the perceptive structure of urban color making use of Gestalt psychology, and discussed the mother vision of urban color. After resolve these problems, my paper begin to research the format construction of the urban color.In the macroscopic layer of urban color, my paper advanced the concept of Urban Color Type by researching the general direction of the color of Chinese sky, soil and vegetation and analyzing the samples of urban color within and out of China. At the same time, concluded some color rules of different urban color type. And then, my paper deduced the criterions of urban color are the sense of cheerful and fresh. When we treat urban color with modern philosophy principle, it will represent the real whole, it’s the important issue of the whole.In the middle scope layer of urban color, my paper advanced the concept of Color Force which is the force on man of the artificial color in the interface of the exterior space. Then, my paper deduced three variables of space-time which decide the color force, and analyzed the color force of city’s district, path, edge, node and landmark from the point of man’s perception. So, there is a bridge be built between urban color and exterior space of city.1try to resolve the problems of urban color in philosophical layer after did these researching and got two elementary results. The results are the value of urban color is it can relate the mass operating and mind expressing, and we should treat urban color with dual philosophical principles. That is, it is the aesthetic experience when we treat urban color with modern philosophical principle and the rational analyzing when treats it with traditional one.Finally, I try to use these researching results in modern Chinese practice and put forward my own points and some ways and means. I think the aim of urban color planning is not the color but the spirit of city. The modern good urban color should combine natural feeing and culture pursuing. There is different between urban color planning and color design. Urban color planning can be expressed by language. It is the important means of figuring and expressing the spirit of city. It’ll play more and more important role in the future.
