For being far away from the political center, having unique geographical locationadjacent to Hong Kong and Macao, and making frequent communication with foreigncountries historically, the development of architecture in South China, which is not only " thefirst recipient", but also "the first pioneer" of the new ideas, has formed a unique regionalstyle. The main line of architectural education in South China area started from theArchitectural Engineering profession in Kwangtung Engineering School founded by Mr. LinKeming in1932, through the Department of Architectural Engineering in KwangtungRangqin University, the Department of Architectural Engineering in National Sun Yat-SenUniversity, the Department of Architectural Engineering in South China Institute ofTechnology (during the Cultural Revolution was renamed the "Kwangtung Institute"), theDepartment of Architecture in South China University of Technology, till the College ofArchitecture in South China University of Technology. It gradually formed a matureprofessional education system, with distinct characteristics of South of the Five Ridges region,attaching importance to architectural technology and engineering practice. It has trained alarge number of outstanding architectural talented persons for the South China area and eventhe whole China.The modern architectural education in South China region is an important part of thewhole Chinese modern architectural education, in recent years the research on it graduallyincreased and achieved certain results. the development process research of architecturaleducation in South China, setting the architectural education in South China University ofTechnology as the main line, is proposed based on the current research situation. This subjectfocus on the period of the early development process from1932to1966before the "CulturalRevolution", It is an important period of creation and exploration, positioning anddevelopment of the architectural education in South China region, making a solid foundationfor the architectural education in South China nowadays.On one hand, through collecting and arranging a large number of historical data andrelated research achievements, this thesis has analyzed the early architectural educationcondition of China and some foreign countries which having made inevitable influence on theearly architectural education’s development in South China region. This thesis also has made aclear historical vein of the creation and exploration, positioning and development of the earlyarchitectural education in South China region, combined with the background of social and history development, from the angle of teaching, scientific research and engineering practice,to display an accurate, objective historical process and fill the research blank of developmenthistory of architectural education in South China region.On the other hand, through the study of the early architectural education’s developmentprocess in South China region, this thesis has summed up the achievements andcharacteristics of it, led by Lin Keming, Xia Changshi, Chen Boqi, Long Qingzhong etcprofessors, and has explored its intrinsic motivation, with the aim to provide a valuablereference to the architectural education present in South China region.Open, fusion, pragmatic and innovation are the basic characteristics of Lingnan culture,which are also the common internal academic qualities of the architectural educatorsof older generation in South China region. The Lingnan cultural characteristics can be fullyreflected on their teaching, scientific research and architecture design, which making thearchitectural education in South China region in its early development process, graduallyform the the dominant teaching idea basing on Lingnan regional characteristics, emphasizingbasic training, paying attention to technology and engineering practice, and establish apersonnel training mode of the integrates of producing, teaching and research, build a solidfoundation for the development of architectural education in South China Region.
