With the economic globalization becoming increasingly intensive,drastic international market competition requires more competitive andinnovative technical products. Nowadays, only depending on internalresources to conduct innovation activities, manufacturing enterprises hasbeen getting increasingly difficult to adapt to rapid market requirementsand increasing intense of market competition. Within this background,innovation model is experiencing a changing from traditional closedinnovation to open innovation of the internet era. This paper mainlydiscussed some problems in the open innovation-oriented productintegrated design theory and methodology. The research achievements aremainly as followed:First, a product integrated design theory is proposed from aperspective of knowledge integration. The review of research aboutintegrated design is analyzed from five different perspectives. After that,this paper proposed four fundamental theorems in design science, i.e.(1)Design is based on prior knowledge.(2) Design knowledge is incomplete.(3) Design emphasizes on new knowledge acquisition.(4) Design is forcompetition. According to these four theorems, this paper proposed atheory framework and built a process model for product integrated design from the perspective of knowledge integration. Such a theory model wouldhelp designers understand better the process of integrated design on ahigher level of abstraction. Such a theory model is also the theoreticalfoundation of the following chapters.Secondly, enlightened by automated planning in artificial intelligence,a novel semi-heuristic planning approach is proposed for automatedconceptual design synthesis. A series of definitions about function, system,functional knowledge, and integration of functional knowledge areproposed. Based on these basic concepts, by means of state-action’s designstates and function actions, this paper developed a semi-heuristic approachof functional knowledge integration based on planning graph technology.Such an approach divided design into two stages, i.e. DESIGN PLAN andDESIGN COMBINATION. A conceptual design case of wave powergeneration system demonstrates that, this approach can help designers findmore feasible principle solutions in wide multidisciplinary solution space.This also improves the problem-solving capabilities of computer-aidedconceptual integrated design system.Thirdly, the framework of mechanical system behavior integrationdesign and online knowledge service is studied. Based on the systemstate-space approach, this paper proposed a framework of system behaviorintegration design and its problem-solving techniques. Employing theFrame knowledge representation method, this paper developed two knowledge service components, i.e. knowledge service providing agent(KSPA) and knowledge service consuming agent (KSCA). A design caseof piston secondary motion and piston skirt tribology behavior simulatingcalculation demonstrates that how to conduct system behavior integrationand knowledge service process. The function of KSPA and KSCA not onlyinvolve service encapsulation, publishment, and consumption ofcomputing process, but also involve all process of online knowledgeservice on the internet between knowledge service providers andknowledge service consumers.Finally, combining the presented integrated design theory andmethodology and practical enterprise application, this paper built ademonstration project of distributed design resource environment within anenterprise. A design resource knowledge service platform is developedaccording to the integrated design theory. Ten design resource units havebeen built in the enterprise. Such an intermediary platform can implementsome functions of publishing, providing, trading, and arbitratingknowledge service, etc. Such an intermediary platform can also helpenterprise take full advantage of its distributed design resources forimplementing rapid product innovation. These entire have importantsignificant for improving the competition of product design.
