Coastal coal-fired power plant is commonly fitted out unloading jetty. Thefactors of operation and mantainence include cooling water heat dispersion, sedimentin channel and basin, wave shelter by breakwater. The temperature increasing atintake influenced by cooling water heat dispersin will decrease the efficiency ofpower units, even interrupted by serious heat-recurrence effection. The requirement ofenvironment is the limitation of range and degree of heat dispersion. Heat dispersionis an important technical item for engineering project. It is related with the layout ofintake and outfall, the length of breakwater, the structure and length of intake headand channel, so as outfall.Numerical model and experiment are the main method in researching coolingwater heat dispersion, the two methods have its advantage and disadvantage as used inother field of coastal port engineering. The numerical model is based on the flowsimulation.2D and3D model are all popular. While treating with the application andcomplex natural condition, there are two aspects should be improved. One isimproving the simulation accuracy. One is finding the formula for estimating theinfluence directly. This paper focused on the two aspects via the application researchof8examples. The main achievements are as follows:(1) Numerical simulation of thermal discharge:There are several kinds of2-D numerical simulations. Three kinds wereintroduced in this paper. Considering fluid density changed with temperature variation,a3-D k mathematical model of turbulent flow is developed, and introducedrefer to the engineering practice of the Jeneponto2×125MW coal fired power plantin Indonesia.(2) Physical simulation of thermal drainage:A physical model of tide current and thermal drainage is developed to elaboratethe thermo-hydraulic characteristics of circulating cooling water in detail in Coastaldynamic and environmental test hall in Tianjin Research Institute of Water TransportEngineering. (3)Research on the rules of thermal dispersion and estimate formulaThe formula took into account with the diacharge of thermal, the value anddirection of tide, the value and period of wave, the open sea area and water depth, alsoinclude the consumption by wind and evaporation.
