The Research Of Pile Dwelling In Southwest China

This thesis is a comprehensive research of various Pile-dwelling in Southwest China based on the field work with the view of regional culture. It’s aim to systematically analyze the characters of these different Pile-dwellings and the relations between them. It is significant to get the holistic approach as the researches before always focus on Pile-dwelling of a certain nation or region.The research has five parts of five aspects. Firstly it takes a macroscopic world view of culture. The pile-dwelling is not only a kind of architecture but also a cultural phenomenon as it originates from a common residence like nest of humanity. The pile-dwelling with some common features now centralized distribute in the Asia Pacific Region, which is a culture area with deep inner link of ethnic origin. In china, pile-dwelling is one of the sources of the great traditional wooden building system.Then on the meso level, it’s the research about formal region of pile-dwelling under the background of Southwest China culture region. According to the intense of the distribution there are three cores of the formal region of pile-dwelling. One is the border area in west Yunnan. One is the junction region of Guizhou and Guangxi, and the third one is the Wuling Mountain area which includes the border of Chongqing, west Hubei, west Hunan and north Guizhou.On the Microcosmic level, it’s a research about the architecture pedigree of the formal region of pile-dwelling and the characters of different series and types of pile-dwelling in detail. The three cores of formal region represent three main series of pile-dwelling, and there are several branches of each series, and each branch has several types. Based on the features of each series, the developing process from primary to transmutation of pile-dwelling is indicated.In addition to the individual pile-dwelling, the settlement of pile dwelling is considered as a cultural landscape which is the result of the interaction of human and nature, include the production mode, social structure and religion.On the aspect of technology of building, there are two main structure forms with different way to support roof and hanging eave as the different technology traditions. Although the technology and the customs of building is various, the rule how the culture influence the building is the same.The five parts with different levels constitute a systematic research of pile dwelling in Southwest China.
